Carolina Hurricanes forwards Andreas Nodl and Brett Sutter have been assigned to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League, team president and general manager Jim Rutherford announced Thursday.

Nodl, 25, split time last season between Philadelphia and Carolina, totaling eight points and eight penalty minutes in 60 games. He was acquired by the 'Canes on Nov. 29, 2011, and appeared in 48 games with the Hurricanes. More Info     Carolina Hurricanes Logo Carolina Hurricanes schedule

Sutter, 25, is in his second season as Charlotte's captain and has 20 points for the Checkers this season. He played in 15 games for the 'Canes in 2011-12 and tallied three assists.

The Hurricanes open the 2013 regular season Saturday with a trip to Florida, and will play their first home game Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

RE: Hurricanes assign Nodl, Sutter to Charlotte

With guys like these being sent down to Charlotte it makes me feel real good about the Canes roster for saturday. I'll have to "educate" myself more at their website and look at the final roster for the opener in Florida. These 2 guys gave some solid minutes last year so the competition for the final roster spots must be pretty close.

Glad they cleared waivers, wasn't sure if Sutter would clear or not.A couple more to go.
