'Canes Kids 'n community foundation donates $200,000

Posted October 25, 2012

— Doug Warf, Vice President of Marketing for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes and Executive Director of the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ‘N Community Foundation, today announced that the foundation will donate $200,000 to four local non-profit children’s organizations and charities. Since its inception, the foundation has donated $10.7 million in cash and in-kind services to charitable and educational programs in North Carolina.

This marks the first year of the Kids ‘N Community Foundation’s new funding structure, which allows the foundation to make a more noticeable impact for deserving organizations.

GOAL (Growing Opportunities and Leaders) Grants will be distributed each fall to two children’s non-profits that focus on the health or educational needs of underserved populations. For year one, two organizations will each receive a two-year commitment of $100,000 ($50,000 per year), and two organizations will receive a three-year, $150,000 commitment. After one year of a staggered starting schedule, six non-profits will receive GOAL Grants on an annual basis – a total annual community investment of $300,000.

The recipients of two-year, $100,000 grants are Triangle Family Services and Marbles Kids Museum. Triangle Family Services provide tools that help local families overcome life challenges, moving them towards more stable and healthy life situations. TFS will use the funding to double the number of children receiving therapy for mental health issues. Now benefiting more than 200 Wake County children, this grant will allow TFS to greatly reduce the number of children on their waitlist. Marbles Kids Muesum, which encourages children to learn new things through imagination, discovery and play, will use the funding to expand the Center Ice exhibit in Power2play. The exhibit will now include a CanesVision and exercise component that teaches children how to train and play like the Hurricanes. With this grant, Marbles Kids Museum will also increase the number of children being served through their outreach program.

InterAct of Wake County and the YMCA of the Triangle are each recipients of three-year, $150,000 grants. InterAct will use the funding to enhance its intervention and prevention services to vulnerable child survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Programs greatly benefiting from this grant include the Children’s Services Program, which consists of child and family counseling, and the Youth Education Services (YES) Program for children grades 3-12 in Wake County schools. The YMCA of the Triangle will use the funding to partner with the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in helping to deliver a Y Learning program to students from three East Durham middle schools. The Y Learning program is an after-school tutorial program that reaches out to students who are struggling academically and need positive role models in their life.

The Kids ‘N Community Foundation will issue 15 additional “Game Changer” grants to non-profit children organizations during their spring grant cycle, totaling $150,000. In addition, at least $50,000 will be donated to youth hockey scholarships across the state through “Future Canes Grants.”

The Carolina Hurricanes Kids ‘N Community Foundation provides much needed funding to children’s charities and education programs throughout North Carolina. The Foundation has funded scholarship programs, youth hockey, educational and literacy efforts, children’s health programs, the arts and other children’s related initiatives. Annually, the Foundation provides cash and in-kind contributions of more than $1 million to charitable and educational programs in North Carolina. Every member of the Hurricanes organization is actively involved in community activities and the Hurricanes take great pride in the ability to have a positive impact in our state.
