Capitol Broadcasting adds ESPN Deportes

— Spanish-speaking sports fans in the Triangle can now turn to ESPN Deportes Radio on 1550 AM (WCLY) as Capitol Broadcasting Company continues to add to its sports radio programming options.

ESPN Deportes Radio has been serving Hispanic sports fans in the U.S. since 2000 and offers a variety of sports talk programming and events, highlighted by exclusive, national Spanish-language broadcasts of Major League Baseball, Mexican League Soccer, UEFA Champions League and NASCAR. ESPN Deportes Radio 1550 AM in the Triangle will be the third affiliate in the Southeast, after Florida and Knoxville, Tenn.

Launching ESPN Deportes Radio 1550 AM allows Capitol Broadcasting to serve the sports listening needs of the area’s growing Hispanic population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Hispanic population reached 45.5 million on July 1, 2007. In North Carolina alone, there are more than 640,000 Hispanic residents.

“We understand the strong interest in sports throughout our region and want to offer quality programming to the very diverse sports fan base in the Triangle,” said Brian Maloney, General Manager of CBC’s sports radio properties. “It is exciting to be able to offer the first Spanish-language sports station to serve our growing Hispanic community in the Triangle.”

Capitol Broadcasting Company, Inc. is the parent company of WRAL-TV and owns and/or operates WRAL Digital, WRAL-FM, WRAL-HD2, WCMC-FM, Microspace, CBC New Media Group and Wolfpack Sports Marketing in Raleigh, NC; WJZY-TV and WMYT-TV in Charlotte, NC; WILM-TV and Sunrise Broadcasting in Wilmington, NC; WRAZ-TV and The Durham Bulls in Durham, NC; and real estate interests including the American Tobacco Project and Diamond View office buildings in Durham, NC.

In August, CBC announced it would expand its radio sports coverage in the Triangle by acquiring 620 The Bull (WDNC), WCLY and the rights to the sports programming on 850 The Buzz (WRBZ). The addition of these stations will complement Capitol’s 99.9 The Fan ESPN Radio, which began an all-sports format in the fall of 2007. The launch of ESPN Deportes 1550 AM (WCLY) is the first move in the sports radio programming restructuring.

PC? Political correctness is what Capitol Broadcasting is exhibiting.

In addition, it's an insult to those with Hispanic ancestry to imply that people who are Hispanic can only speak and understand Spanish.

There a federal regulation that in order to be a naturalized citizen one must be able to read, speak and understand English. Therefore this effort is for the most part aimed at illegal aliens, who we should not be acclimating and welcoming into our community.

I totally agree with allaboutunc. They should learn to speak our language; period. Do you know how many illegals are here right now?

As an addendum to my previous quote - I am sure Capitol Broadcasting will see a surge in advertising revenue from this addition. NOT

    Yep...It's complement vs. compliment.
