ACC names Vasquez player of year
By JOEDY McCREARY,AP Sports Writer Mar 10, 2010
Raleigh, N.C. — Greivis Vasquez is the Atlantic Coast Conference's player of the year.
The Maryland star on Tuesday won the league's top individual honor following a season in which he averaged nearly 20 points and helped lead the Terrapins to a share of the regular-season title.
Vasquez received 39 of a possible 53 votes by members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association. Duke's Jon Scheyer received 12 votes and Virginia Tech's Malcolm Delaney had two.
Vasquez is the sixth Maryland player to win the award and the first since Juan Dixon in 2002. He was a unanimous selection to the all-ACC first team a day earlier.
Player of the year
Greivis Vasquez, Maryland (39)
Jon Scheyer, Duke (12)
Malcolm Delaney, Virginia Tech (2)
Williams shares honor with star player
Maryland's Gary Williams is the Atlantic Coast Conference's coach of the year.
The ACC on Tuesday named Williams as its top coach as determined by a vote of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.
Williams was an overwhelming choice to win the award for the second time and first since 2002 — when he won the national championship.
He received 42 of 53 votes. Duke's Mike Krzyzewski was second with eight votes.
Williams' Terrapins enter this week's ACC tournament in Greensboro as the league's hottest team.
They have won seven straight, hold the No. 2 seed and earned a share of the regular-season title with a 13-3 league record — their best since going 15-1 during the national title season in 2001-02.
Coach of the year
Gary Williams, Maryland (42)
Mike Krzyzewski, Duke (8)
Seth Greenberg, Virginia Tech (2)
Leonard Hamilton, Florida State (1)
Georgia Tech's Favors is top rookie
Derrick Favors walked onto Georgia Tech's campus followed by plenty of high expectations as one of the program's most touted recruits in recent years.
He'll enter this week's Atlantic Coast Conference tournament as the league's top newcomer.
Favors was named ACC rookie of the year for the 2009-10 season after earning 45 of 53 votes from members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association in results released Tuesday. Maryland's Jordan Williams was second with six votes after helping the Terrapins earn a share of the league's regular-season title.
Favors is the 11th Georgia Tech player to win the award and first since Chris Bosh in 2003. No other school has won more than eight times.
Big things were expected right away from Favors, a McDonald's All-American who was the preseason choice for rookie of the year after a stellar prep career in Atlanta.
"I just worked hard," Favors said. "I worked on all my weaknesses and got stronger. I just didn't pay any attention to the pressure."
The 6-foot-10 Favors averaged 11.9 points and 8.4 rebounds this season to lead all league freshmen in scoring, rebounding, double-doubles, blocked shots and shooting percentage. He was named rookie of the week four times this season.
Favors reached double figures in scoring in his first nine college games, then scored in double figures for the last five games — including a 21-point, 18-rebound effort against Maryland in February.
His biggest adjustment early on was improving his conditioning — "There's a lot of banging down low that goes along with the running," he said. Favors also worked to stay mentally focused night in and night out while trying to avoid early foul trouble that notably limited him in a loss at Duke.
The Yellow Jackets face North Carolina in Thursday's ACC tournament first-round game in Greensboro, N.C., knowing that they need a win to bolster their NCAA chances.
"I don't think there's any pressure," Favors said. "It's just come out and do what we're capable of doing."
Rookie of the year
Derrick Favors, Georgia Tech (45)
Jordan Williams, Maryland (6)
Durand Scott, Miami (1)
Glen Rice Jr., Georgia Tech (1)
Defensive honor goes to FSU's Singleton
Florida State's Chris Singleton is the defensive player of the year in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Singleton was the leading vote-getter on the league's all-defensive team after leading the league in steals at 2.3 per game. He also averaged 1.5 blocks per game.
Teammate Solomon Alabi was had the second-highest vote total after leading the league with 2.3 blocks per game.

RE: ACC names Vasquez player of year
I think Jon was robbed of player of the year. Vasquez might be a show boat but in my opinion as an all around player Scheyer is better. For the most part their numbers were very close but when you look at turnovers, there was a bit of a difference there. I think that I would have to agree with Dick Vitale Saturday night when he said that he thought there should be Co-Players of the Year (It has happened before). They were so close. That would have been just.

I think Scheyer didn't get it because he had a lot more help from Singler and Smith. They were a three-man wrecking crew. But Vasquez was more of a one-man wrecking crew with a lot less help from his teammates. If Scheyer had an off night, the other two could pick up the slack. But if Vasquez had an off night, good chance Maryland was losing.

I can agree with that and it is true but even when Jon had bad games, they were good games. He only had one or two games that he did not score in double figures. Vasquez is there team but I don't know if that makes him player of the year. I still say it should have been Jon or a tie.

Maybe so. I was just pointing out why Vasquez may have gotten more respect. He IS Maryland's team.

Vasquez deserves this honor. He was the best down the stretch. He pulled out several games for Maryland.

....they would have made the NIT.
do we need to find any other proof then this post to state the claim that UNC fans are a joke.....is this even for real???

kickmeoutroy.....who is your favorite team?
cause you obviously are a hater for UNC on here looking at all your comments, why don't you coach a AAU team out there in Tarboro to give yourself more to do than bash bash and bash what has already been dealt. There should be no more to say about UNC and the record they posted this year. Gosh, I mean it is obvious...they're not going to the tourney and only hope that they may get selected for NIT because of the name.
Get a life Kickmeoutroy from Tarboro....if there's anything out that way to do! I guess that's why you post so much on here.....

First off i should Take Hitler's spot and coach your boys, i would have got you in the NCAA.....2nd, i was commenting on the fact that you guys have an excuse for everything. Your Coach is bad, deal with it. This class (09') isnt as good as first thought. 3rd your injuries would not have changed much, if anything at all!! And you guys get all over State fans about everything, but i have to give it to State fans they are men about it. They know they have been bad and they have problems and they admit the problems they have and dont make excuses about it all year long. Be a man, know they suck and dont make post like markd8 did.....your welcome

Well, I'm not going to Bash State...But what excuses could they really come up with...they haven't had a winning season in quite some time now. So excuses are out the door...
Point is Caroline HAS had too many injuries this season and it's really obvious when everything went down hill for them (C of C). Another is they are young....Actually I wouldn't want you to coach a AAU team if you would expect them to win an NBA championship....I'm over it..and I'm sure all the other fans are too, heck the season is a wrap. But to continue to bash and bash shows a lot about your thoughts on Roy and UNC. And I'm sure you wouldn't make it to a 1A championship if you were coaching......

not bashing, just the truth. And im glad you gave up on them, i jsut wish you could tell the rest of your fans the same.....maybe you have a good head on you but the rest dont, im sorry.

This recognition could have easily been a UNC player (but John Wall was snubbed and went to UK).
Vasquez is a consistent performer as well as a class act.

Two things here - I don't think that even Wall could have helped UNC this year.
Vaszuez a call act? What games are you watching? In football, he would be getting yardage penalties for his antics. Maybe they should start that in basketball. Great player, sure, but his attitude overshadows his play. Co-player of the year would have been in order here. A class act, Scheyer and no class Vasques. As for Williams Coach of the Year - he had one player, without whom he would have been in the bottom of the pack. Coaches of well rounded teams deserve COY, not one dimensional teams like Maryland. I like Gary but he is not COY quality this year.

Do you even know anything about coaching and basketball?! Let's look at it from a stats point FIRST: One dimensional team? All 5 starters avg double digit scoring (J Williams was at 9.3ppg) Eric Hayes and Sean Mosely were .430% + 3 pnt shooters and our bench avg 18 ppg. So GV was the LEADER of this team as well as its primary player. Gary has helped take his emotional play and channeled it towards being a leader. That is a "well rounded team" as you mentioned. Also, taking a team from pre-season expectations of 5th place and tying for first? That's compiled with the above stats is why he won COY. As far as GV for POY, his stats, and leadership deserved it. Scheyer is a great player and Co-POY would not have been out of line, but obviously the sports writers (39 out of 53) said other wise.
