ACL injury puts NC State's Byrd out for season

Posted October 15, 2013

Jarvis Byrd (14) tackles Bra'Lon Cherry (13) during the NC State Spring Game on April 20, 2013 in Raleigh, NC.

NC State head football coach Dave Doeren has announced that redshirt senior safety Jarvis Byrd has a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. Byrd was injured during the Wolfpack’s game at Wake Forest on Oct. 5.

"Jarvis is a true champion,” said Doeren. “This team and staff love him as a brother and respect him as a leader. It is so unfortunate that a player like Jarvis, who has been through two other ACL surgeries, has to endure another. I know that he will have a tremendous attitude and will use all the support available to him to have a healthy recovery.”

Byrd, a member of the team’s Leadership Council, started the first five games this season at safety after playing cornerback in previous campaigns. He has played 302 snaps in 2013, tallying 17 tackles, and served as a team captain for the Richmond game.

The Pahokee, Fla,. native earned a starting job as a true freshman in 2009 before suffering his first torn ACL in a win against North Carolina. He missed all of the 2010 season as he rehabbed from the injury and then suffered a second torn ACL during 2011 summer workouts and missed that entire season as well.

In 2012, Byrd saw action in just four games as he was hampered by other injuries.

Geeze, I HATE to see any athlete go through so many injuries like this. Thomas Davis of the Panthers has had three ACL tears on the same knee, and he's having a terrific season, but that is very unusual. Even if he heals, NFL teams will look at his history of ACL tears. Thoughts and prayers out to him. It's got to be so hard on him to have his dreams shattered; I can only hope he beats the odds and has a full recovery.

He has already had 2 ACL surgeries. He better get his degree so he can get a job after school is finished. He may have the spirit, but not the body for this sport. Tough luck.

Best of luck and a big thankyou to Jarvis for his committment to the Wolfpack. Hopefully some healing can take place the next two weeks and his Wolfpack team can make him proud in the rest of the season.

So hard to believe that this young man has this happen to him three times. At some point you have to wonder if playing the game is worth it.

Get that degree young man and you'll be OK.

This is so unfortunate. He's missed 2 years due to injury, and about half of this one. Come on NCAA - he is certainly worthy of a 6th year medical hardship. He DESERVES IT!

Hang in their Jarvis! WPN loves you man!

Sometimes the injury bug just won't leave some players alone.

Best wishes to this young man.
