Anunike, Brown & Edwards named ACC Players of the Week

Posted November 11, 2013

Defensive end Kenny Anunike, linebacker Kelby Brown and safety DeVon Edwards all received ACC Player of the Week honors Monday following Duke’s 38-20 win over N.C. State Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Anunike received ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors, Brown was named ACC Co-Linebacker of the Week and Edwards was tabbed ACC Rookie of the Week after helping the Blue Devils improve to 7-2 and extend their winning streak to five games after Saturday’s defeat of the Wolfpack. With the three selections, Duke has now received 11 ACC Player of the Week awards this season and at least one honor in five of the past six game weeks. The awards were the first of Anunike and Edwards’ careers, while Brown’s was his second this season.

Edwards, a redshirt freshman safety and kickoff returner, also received Walter Camp Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week, Hornung Award Honor Roll and CFPA National Defensive Performer and Defensive Back of the Week honors after scoring three touchdowns against N.C. State, including a 100-yard kickoff return and interception returns of 25 and 45 yards. In his second career start, he totaled 10 tackles and added a pass breakup. His interception returns for touchdowns came on back-to-back plays in the fourth quarter during a 16-second span in which Duke turned a 24-20 advantage into a 38-20 lead. He became the first FBS player in the past 10 seasons to score three non-offensive touchdowns in the same game.

Anunike, a redshirt senior, logged a career-high 11 tackles against N.C. State, including one for a loss as Duke’s defense forced four N.C. State turnovers and gave up just 13 points. Anunike’s tackle for loss came on 1st-and-goal from Duke’s five-yard line when he stopped N.C. State running back Shadrach Thornton in a drive that eventually ended in a Wolfpack field goal. The tackle for loss was Anunike’s team-leading 11th of the season, a total that ranks seventh in the ACC.

Brown, a redshirt junior who earned ACC Linebacker of the Week honors for Duke’s second straight game week, posted 10 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, one forced fumble and one quarterback hurry against N.C. State. With Duke ahead 7-0 and N.C. State at Duke’s 20-yard line, Brown knocked the ball loose from Wolfpack quarterback Brandon Mitchell which was recovered by safety Jeremy Cash for the first of four Duke turnovers on the day. He would later sack Wolfpack quarterback Pete Thomas for a nine-yard loss on 3rd-and-goal from the Duke three-yard line, forcing the Wolfpack to settle for a field goal.

Duke will return to the field Saturday against No. 23 Miami in the Blue Devils’ final home game of the season. The game features a clash of two ACC Coastal Division contenders, as Duke and Miami boast matching 3-2 conference records and trail Miami by two games for the division lead.
