Area HBCU's add to perfect football weekend in Triangle
Oct 9, 2012
What a weekend for the Triangle schools in football. Every team in the Raleigh/Durham area won their game - and not just the big three.
The three HBCU's represented the Triangle this weekend with victiroes of their own to make it a six-team sweep.
Division I, FCS level, North Carolina Central University pulled off a big win over powerhouse South Carolina State, 40-10. They are now 2-0 in the MEAC.
The Falcons of Saint Augustine's University are 2-1 in the CIAA and 4-2 overall after holding on in a wild win Saturday. The star of the day was Tyron Laughinghouse who earned his fourth consecutive CIAA weekly honor Monday following three touchdowns and 79 yards receiving. Roderick Davenport rushed for 127 yards on 27 carries. The Falcons had a season high 495 offensive yards, 218 yards rushing and 277 yards passing. Back up quarterback Alex Munro was 11-for-18 for 156 yards passing for three TDs. The Falcons travel to Winston-Salem this week to play the Rams. They host the Fayetteville State Broncos for homecoming Oct. 20.
The Shaw Bears pulled their record to 3-3 and 2-1 in the CIAA with their weekend win. Shaw running back Marquise Grizzle added to an impressive season as he rushed for 163 yards. He now has had three 100-yard rushing games this year. He also caught five passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. Grizzle was originally going to Murray state - a Division I program - but did not qualify academically and was picked up by the Bears a few days before school started. He never even took a visit to Shaw but has proven to be a great pick up. The Bears have Livingstone College next followed by Johnson C. Smith for homecoming.
