Bad news, good news for ACC Techs

Wow, just what Brian Gregory didn’t need, huh?

The Georgia Tech basketball coach’s security status took a hard, heavy hit Tuesday, when the school announced that junior center Robert Carter will transfer.

Although he missed 10 games last season due to a knee injury, the 6-9, 250-pounder finished with an 11.4 point average and 8.4 rebounds.

Losing Carter basically completes a frontcourt wipeout. Daniel Miller (10.9 ppg, 7.8 rpg) and Kam Holsey (7.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg) graduated, as did guard Trae Golden, who led the team in scoring with a 13.3 average.

Earlier this spring, sophomore guard Solomon Poole (6.4 ppg) announced he would transfer.

Look no more for your preseason pick for No. 15 in the ACC race. On paper, the Jackets look like a lock for last.

Gregory, in three seasons, has gone 43-52 overall and 16-36 in the conference. A consistent winner at Dayton, he was considered a nice catch when Paul Hewitt was dismissed after 11 seasons. But barring something stunning, Gregory is a long shot to be around after ’14-’15.

Hmm. Maybe Tech will go shopping again in Dayton. Archie Miller would be a safer pick.

If Gregory is having a miserable off-season, new Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams has to be all smiles with the news that ex-Maryland guard Seth Allen will make a move from College Park to Blacksburg.

Allen, from Woodbridge, Va., will have two seasons left after having to sit next season.

Like Carter, Allen missed several games in mid-season (foot injury), but finished with a 13.1 scoring average and will join what should be one of the ACC’s best perimeters in ’15-’16. Junior Adam Smith averaged 11 points last season while sophomore guards Devin Wilson (9.2 ppg) and Ben Emelogu (10.5 ppg) had solid rookie seasons even though the team’s 9-22 record sent James Johnson packing.

Williams, 41, went 139-69 in six seasons at Marquette.

By the time ECU officially joins the American Athletic Conference in July, the Pirates may know if the league will have football divisions in the future and if so, where they’ll be placed.

AAC commissioner Mike Aresco said Tuesday that a decision should be reached by early summer. The league will have 11 members after Tulane and Tulsa come aboard with the Pirates. Navy will become No. 12 in football in 2015. Former member Louisvile is off to the ACC.

ECU’s eight game conference schedule is already set with games in Dowdy-Ficklen against SMU (Oct. 4), Connecticut (Oct. 23), Tulane (Nov. 22) and Central Florida (Dec. 4).

On the road, the Pirates will face South Florida (Oct. 11), Temple (Nov. 1), Cincinnati (Nov. 13) and Tulsa (Nov. 28).

ECU vs. SMU, Tulane, UCF, and Tulsa. Are you sure they aren't just staying in CUSA?
