Chapel Hill, N.C. — Baseball excitement builds Thursday as both the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University practice in advance of their Super Regionals this weekend.
But the college game won't be the only thing on the mind of every player. Tar Heel third baseman Colin Moran has a chance to be the top overall pick in Thursday's Major League Baseball Draft.
The UNC junior was considered a dark horse about a month ago, but he is getting more and more talk as a guy Houston, the team with that top pick, is interested in. The draft starts at 7 p.m. Even if Moran is not drafted first, he stands to cash in.
By the time that pick is made, Moran's Tar Heel teammates and cross-town rivals on the Wolfpack will be plenty keyed up for their Super Regional games on Friday.
"I know why I'm not relaxed, and I guess that's old age, so I guess youth is what makes them so relaxed," said State head coach Elliot Avent.
UNC plays first, at 1 p.m. against South Carolina. NC State plays at 4 p.m. against Rice. They'll repeat that schedule on Saturday. Both teams need to win the best-of-three series to advance to the College World Series.
Ticketholders will want to check the forecast, too, as Tropical Storm Andrea, which formed Wednesday afternoon in the Gulf of Mexico, had set a track for the Triangle. As of Wednesday at 6 p.m., the models showed the bulk of the storm crossing North Carolina on Friday afternoon.
