Baseball fans have lots to look forward to this week

State loose in baseball practice

— Baseball excitement builds Thursday as both the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University practice in advance of their Super Regionals this weekend.

But the college game won't be the only thing on the mind of every player. Tar Heel third baseman Colin Moran has a chance to be the top overall pick in Thursday's Major League Baseball Draft.

The UNC junior was considered a dark horse about a month ago, but he is getting more and more talk as a guy Houston, the team with that top pick, is interested in. The draft starts at 7 p.m. Even if Moran is not drafted first, he stands to cash in.

By the time that pick is made, Moran's Tar Heel teammates and cross-town rivals on the Wolfpack will be plenty keyed up for their Super Regional games on Friday.

"I know why I'm not relaxed, and I guess that's old age, so I guess youth is what makes them so relaxed," said State head coach Elliot Avent.

UNC plays first, at 1 p.m. against South Carolina. NC State plays at 4 p.m. against Rice. They'll repeat that schedule on Saturday. Both teams need to win the best-of-three series to advance to the College World Series.

Ticketholders will want to check the forecast, too, as Tropical Storm Andrea, which formed Wednesday afternoon in the Gulf of Mexico, had set a track for the Triangle. As of Wednesday at 6 p.m., the models showed the bulk of the storm crossing North Carolina on Friday afternoon.

Summer: the most boring time of year to watch sports. Major League Baseball: a great excuse for an afternoon nap.

We all get to look forward to a tropical storm. Oh, goody. At least, the Heels pitchers get an extra day of rest.

Real baseball is not played with aluminum bats. As for my team St Louis, best record in Baseball currently. You know the real kind.

Since you're from Chicago I can understand why you have trouble recognizing "real" baseball. There's only 1 major league franchise in Chicago (Sox); the pathetic Cubs give you plenty of exposure to minor league baseball which explains your familiarity with the A-level.

    Big DUKE FAN here!

For some reason, not excited about baseball this weekend, other than my son playing All-Stars.

Good luck to you and your team.

    GO DUKE!

Sorry this is not real Baseball. This is single A level (at best) with aluminum bats.

Go ACC. It is amazing how fast the tickets were gone to the Super Regional games. Can't wait. Just hope the rain stays to the East. Go Pack.

UNC and NCSU fans will be out in full force for sure. I hope we both win. It would be cool to see both teams in Omaha!
