Bernard, Cooper, Wilson earn ACC weekly honors

— Giovani Bernard returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown in the final seconds of North Carolina’s 43-35 win over rival North Carolina State and on Monday was named the ACC special team player of the week.

Bernard also led the team with eight receptions for 95 yards and tacked on 135 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Despite missing two games, Bernard is 17th in the nation with 930 rushing yards and sixth in the nation with 90 points scored.

On Monday, Bernard was named one of 16 semifinalsts for the Maxwell Award which honors the collegiate player of the year. He is one of three sophomores up for the award and one of only two players from the ACC joining Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel.

UNC offensive lineman Jonathan Cooper was also honored by the conference as the Offensive Lineman of the Week after playing 85 snaps. Cooper has yet to allow a sack all season.

NC State defensive back C.J. Wilson had an interception and a forced fumble Saturday against the Tar Heels and was rewarded with Co-Defensive Back of the Week honors. Wilson shared the recognition with Florida State’s Donald Darby who had four tackles against Duke as the Seminoles limited Connor Vernon and the Blue Devils to just 129 passing yards.

Other weekly ACC honors went to Clemson quarterback Taj Boyd, Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins, Maryland defensive end Joe Vellano, Florida State linebacker Christian Jones and Maryland freshman wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

    All players are very deserving, but so is Glennon. His numbers would have been even more impressive had his recievers not dropped at least seven footballs. Yardage like Glennon put up usually win games.

    I'm really happy for Gio, and I'm going to enjoy watching him play the remaining games because I'm pretty sure he'll be playing Sundays next year. Gio is a one in a million player - talented, hard working, and humble.

    I agree with these three, but Glennon should be listed. Boyd and Watkins racked up some huge numbers. Boyd set a record at Clemson with huge yardage.

    I admit that I haven't seen Taj Boyd's numbers, but Mike Glennon picked UNC's secondary apart and had receivers drop 5 or 6 passes that hit them right in the numbers. I'm glad UNC rode to victory on Gio's performance, but Glennon passed for 467 yards and was sensational. Good job Mike. GO HEELS!

    Ther should be an award for coach TOB. He's the one that elected not to run the clock out and to kick it to Geo instead of out of bounds. The win wouldn't have been posible without him.

    It should have been special teams, running back, and offensive player of the game. Not greedy but really who outplayed him this week?
