Blizzard puts Canes game in Buffalo on ice

Due to whiteout conditions and temperatures near zero in Buffalo, N.Y., the National Hockey League announced on Tuesday the postponement of Tuesday night's Eastern Conference tilt between the Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres.

The teams had been scheduled to play at First Niagara Center at 7 p.m.

No information about a possible makeup date has been released. The last Hurricanes game to be postponed by weather was in January 2000, when a home game against the Phoenix Coyotes was postponed one day due to snow in Raleigh.

The Hurricanes are scheduled to return to Raleigh on Thursday for a 7 p.m. game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I'm surprised the NHL didn't cancel the game before the Canes flew to Buffalo. That made no sense at all. The weather had been forecasted for days to be blizzard like.

Leafs and Islanders did play - it was former Cane Tim Gleason's debut with the Leafs. He was on the ice against newly named Canadian Olympian John Tavarus' line....Leafs lost 5 - 3 when they allowed 3 third period goals....Tim played very well.

Indeed, this is the dumbest comment of the day...lol

Good move on the part of the NHL. No need to risk lives for a hockey game.

"In the meantime directly across the lake to the north, the Toronto Maple Leafs are playing the New York Islanders at the Air Canada Centre. Current temperature outside is -22C (or -8 F) - the same conditions as Buffalo (but worse) " -westernwake2

You win a gold star for dumbest comment of the day. Look up Lake Effect Snow and what it does on the south side of the lake.

It's not the temperature as much as the blizzard conditions. It's too dangerous to be out on the roads. It is unusual to cancel a hockey game due to weather, though.

In the meantime directly across the lake to the north, the Toronto Maple Leafs are playing the New York Islanders at the Air Canada Centre. Current temperature outside is -22C (or -8 F) - the same conditions as Buffalo (but worse) and our hockey game is still on & fans are showing up.

There is really no excuse for cancelling the Hurricanes-Sabres game.

Might be a momentum killer for the Canes....they were on a roll!

Plenty of hockey on the NHL Center Ice package tonight....I'll be surfing such to find a good game! Or you could always watch the Notre Dame - NC State roundball encounter...will ND be 2 - 0 in the ACC when the game is over?

You'd have to be one heckuva diehard Sabre (or Hurricane) fan to even be thinking about attending the game...probably a good decision on a couple of fronts. Additionally, my daughter and I are making the roadie to Columbus (my home town) for Friday's game, and now it won't be the 5th game in 7 nights (though still the second back-to-back of the week). I'm worried about the 'Canes coming out tired and flat for that game but now things might be a little better.

Beer must be in short supply in Buffalo right now.
