Blues on steroids and the NFL playoffs

Posted January 21, 2013

— The coach, Steve Logan, was welcomed Monday morning to some “Blues on steroids,” inspiring him to take an afternoon nap, but first he dropped some insights into the conference championship games that led to a Ravens-49ers Super Bowl.

Joining Mark and Mike on 620 The Buzz for his weekly segment, Logan said the first thing he does when “attempting to comment on a game,” is “tear the game apart with the statistics.”

“You are looking at turnover ratios, how they rank, run, pass, blah, blah, blah,” Logan said. “Those things, somehow, they are telling you what’s going to happen.”

Logan said that the numbers did not lie Sunday during the Ravens-Patriots game where New England’s bottom-tiered secondary statistically let them down against Joe Flacco. Also, Flacco has proven himself as a poor-weather quarterback and Baltimore’s gameday motivation surrounding Ray Lewis is real.

As far as the NFC championship goes, Matt Ryan’s injury would not have kept him from playing in two weeks, but the play of the game wasn’t recognized during the broadcast. The crucial interception that San Francisco pulled down was created by Ryan throwing to a spot and Roddy White falling down. That said, Atlanta was going to have to play a perfect game to beat the 49ers.

Oh, and did you know Steve Logan recruited Troy Aikman at Tulsa? Turns out Aikman was not interested in Logan’s team and was more interested in the “sexiest sweater,” thus, choosing to play in the wishbone offense at Oklahoma before getting hurt and transferring.

And did Logan take a shot at Manti Te’o when talking about the girlfriends of two SEC quarterbacks?

Plus, during an hour of radio gold, Logan said that his message to kids was always, “Don’t be the reason we lost this game. Be the reason we won the game.”

Some good observations. I can't think of a single Belichick team that has had a very good secondary, but he always has top notch line-backers. Even going back to his days as a Giants assistant he had Lawrence Taylor spearheading the charge. His current bunch are good ones lead by Hightower & Mayo ..... basically an SEC group.

Love listening to Logan - the man has so much knowledge to share and he's entertaining as heck. I wish we could have him all year long, not just during football season.
