Bobcats going back in time moving forward

As an adult, when everyday life and frustrations bog me down, I’ll throw on some 80s tunes and that takes me back to a simpler time when I was in elementary and middle school and didn’t have a care in the world. No bills, no jobs, just get up, go to school and go outside and play. But when the music stops, it’s still 2013 and I have bills and jobs and no time to play.

The Charlotte Bobcats are doing the exact same thing. The Bobcats have the worst record in the league over the last two seasons. So they want to go back to the old days when the franchise was known as the Charlotte Hornets.

I remember going to Hornets games as a kid with my mom and dad, and those are some of my favorite memories. We’re talking Kelly Tripuka, Muggsy Bouges, Dell Curry to Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Glen Rice. Coaches like Dick Harter, (giggity), Allan Bristow and Dave Cowens roamed the benches. The old Charlotte Coliseum was rocking every night, and the franchise led the league in attendance in many of those years.

Unfortunately the battle between ownership and the city led to that team leaving for New Orleans.

Pro basketball has been back in Charlotte for nine seasons now, but the success and fan support of those early years has not returned to the Queen City. That’s not all the fault of the Bobcats. I truly think the league doesn’t have the same following as it did in the 1980s and 90s. Stars jump from team to team, strikes, lockouts and arena deals tend to get in the way of any loyalty from fans. Nonetheless, more butts need to be in the seats.

I’m a North Carolina kid, and nothing would please me more than to watch a hometown team with a hometown owner do well. Some think changing the team’s name will help the franchise relive the glory years of the old Hornets. But at the end of the day, it’s 2013 and the team needs more than a name change to revive a once-proud basketball city.

Unfortunately, it will take a lot more than a name change to bring Charlotte's NBA team back to the Glory Days. I was excited when MJ bought the team, because I thought that the man who was the best player ever HAD to be a great owner, and would bring Championships to Charlotte. Sad to say, that's been far from what has happened since His Airness took possession of the team. If Jordan was half as good an owner as he was a player, Charlotte might just be challenging that "other" great player - King James - for an NBA title.

Very true Brad, but they do need to win more games. Doesn't hurt to bring the "Hornets" name back and get rid of any lasting memory of Bob Johnson...
