Bobcats' Zeller excited to play in Charlotte

Posted July 1, 2013

University of Indiana product, and the No. 4 pick in this year’s NBA Draft, Cody Zeller is excited about being a member of the Charlotte Bobcats organization and is ready to contribute in any way possible.

“I’m definitely excited where I ended up,” Zeller said while joining Mike and Mark on The World Strongest Morning Show on 620 the Buzz Monday morning. “I’m excited to get down here and start working out.”

Zeller, also known as ‘The Big Handsome’, averaged 16.5 points per game with a 56.2 field goal percentage, 8.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in his sophomore year at Indiana.

The Bobcats, who finished the 2012-13 season 21-61, recently hired Steve Clifford as their head coach and the team possesses promising young talent obtained through recent drafts.

“There are a lot of young players with good work ethic here,” Zeller said. “That matches up with everything I’m about. It’s definitely going to be fun playing with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Kemba Walker.”

He will work closely with newly hired assistant coach, and 1985 No. 1 pick, Patrick Ewing.

Zeller does not know what position he will play this season but said he will play any position to help the team. He emphasized the desire to improve his perimeter game and recalls holding his own against this year’s No. 2 overall pick, Victor Oladipo, in three-point contests.

“I’ll shoot outside a lot more than I did in college,” said Zeller.

Zeller’s agent was aware that the Bobcats selected him minutes before it was announced, but decided to make it a surprise.

Zeller is excited for the opportunity to play under the six-time NBA Champ Michael Jordan.

“I think it will be a unique experience to learn from the greatest basketball player ever,” Zeller said.

Cody has two older brothers currently in the NBA, Luke and Tyler. Tyler, a graduate of the University of North Carolina, was drafted No. 17 in the 2012 NBA Draft and currently plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

I'm pretty sure Jordan picked Zeller in an attempt to sabotage the 2013-14 season and wind up with (hopefullly) the #1 pick in an absolutely loaded 2014 draft.

Either that, or he's just being Michael.

I like the pick. I think they made the right move. Liked what I saw from Zeller during the Kentucky/Indiana Sweet Sixteen game in 2012. High octane/up and down game and Zeller proved he could hang.

I know most wanted Nerlens Noel...but his knee problems last year left me concerned...along with his lack of a real offensive game. I kept waiting to see him drop some serious points at Kentucky....but it never happened. I'd hate to see Charlotte get into a waiting game for his offense to come around.

At the end of the day I'd rather go with someone without those issues. Noel is a heck of an athlete tho'.........

Jordan to Zeller: The goal of the upcoming season is to lose as many games possible.

I like Zeller as well as any in the top 8, at least. He will give this team 100% effort in practice and games. He shot 56.2% FG's, 8.1 rebs, 1.3 blocks as a Soph. He is going to get much stronger, and these numbers will improve with rebounding and blocks. Solid as any, and much better than most in the long haul. Some will not be able to hang. Zeller will be in the NBA for a long time, IMO. He comes from great stock, and he has developed a great work ethic, positive attitude, and a personal pride in himself. A total winner.

Zeller's work ethic and character will do him well in Charlotte. I'm not convinced he was the best choice, but I AM convinced Zeller will give his all, and that goes a long way. I wish him all the best.

Glad someone learned how to make a statement right after getting drafted... Unlike this gem...

I guess the course on tact wasn't on the keep athlete's eligible curriculum at UNC...
