Raleigh, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes will bring back assistant coaches Rod Brind’Amour and Steve Smith, as well as video coach Chris Huffine for the 2017-18 season, the team announced Friday.
The Canes have also added L.J. Scarpace as video coach.
Head Coach Bill Peters signed a contract extension in July 2016, which goes through the 2018-19 season.
“We feel strongly that we have the right people in place to help our young team take the next step this season,” said Executive Vice President and General Manager Ron Francis. “The addition of L.J. Scarpace allows our staff even more capabilities on the video side.”
Scarpace, 41, recently completed his 12th season under Red Berenson with the University of Michigan men’s hockey program, and his third season as the team’s director of player development.
Brind’Amour played 10 seasons for the Canes, helping them to the 2006 Stanley Cup.He has been part of the staff since 2011, working mostly with player development and special teams.
Smith is a four-time Stanley Cup winner -- three as a player with the Edmonton Oilers, one as a scout for the Chicago Blackhawks. It will be his fourth season on the Canes staff and eighth overall as an NHL coach after a 16-year playing career.
