Campbell put the tying run on third in the top of the eighth inning, but Winthrop held on for a 3-2 victory in the final game of the Big South Conference baseball series Sunday afternoon.

The Camels fell to 23-28 overall and 8-13 in the league. Winthrop leads the conference as its record improved to 29-20 overall and 15-6 in league play.

Adam Wyse led off the top of the eighth with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error by Eagle center fielder Matthew Mulkey. Wyse moved to third on a groundout by Drew Butler, but he was thrown out at the plate on Matthew Barefoot’s fielder’s choice in the next at-bat.

Riley Arnone sat the Camels down in order in the ninth to give the Eagles their second win of the series. Arnone was credited with the save after allowing just one hit in the final two innings on the mound.

Colton Rendon (6-3) earned the win on the mound after tossing seven innings with just one earned run on six hits and nine strikeouts. Ryan Kirk (3-6) took the loss after allowing three earned runs in 4 1/3 innings with a strikeout and two walks.

Butler went 2-for-4 at the plate with a RBI. His single in the fifth scored Kyle Mehl while Zach Minnick came around to score from first after a fielding error by Mulkey. Butler’s hit went all the way to the wall and he tried to score on the play, but he was thrown out at the plate.

Wyse collected a pair of hits in three trips to the plate while Barefoot, Minnick and Kevin Barron also tallied a base knock each.

Erik Dowse pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief and didn’t allow a hit and issued just one walk. Wyatt Tyson pitched a clean ninth inning and tallied a strikeout.

Babe Thomas led the Eagles at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort and a RBI while Mulkey and Mitch Spires each had a hit and drove in a run. Winthrop plated the first run of the game in the second and added a pair of runs in the third.

The Camels will play their final non-conference game of the season on the road Tuesday at East Carolina. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
