BSB: Campbell edge Ball State 4-3

Posted March 12, 2014

— Danny Pardo’s inside the park grand slam and Bobby Thorson’s eight strikeouts lifted Campbell over Ball State 4-3 Wednesday at Jim Perry Stadium, earning the Camels a sweep in the two-game midweek series.

Pardo’s only hit of the game came in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded, driving B.J. Butler’s offering over centerfielder Alex Call and to the wall in left-center.

Campbell moved to 13-5 with the win, while Ball State slipped to 10-7 overall.

The inside the park homer was Campbell’s first since Rob Meng completed the feat against Stetson in 2007. Blake Boyce hit Campbell’s last grand slam last season in a win over UNC Greensboro.

The homer was Pardo’s second of the year, with the first coming last week against Appalachian State in Winston-Salem.

Ball State led 1-0 before the four-run home half of the fourth, striking first on Sean Godfrey’s solo shot to left in the first.

The Cardinals brought the game within a run in the seventh with another long ball, this time a two-run homer from Ryan Spaulding to make it 4-3 before Ryan Thompson entered the game for the Camels.

Thompson, a senior righty from Turner, Ore., pitched a hitless final 2 2/3, retiring eight of the nine Cardinals he faced, striking out two and allowing just one walk to pick up his fourth save.

Thorson (1-3), a junior righthander from Sugar Grove, Ill., went six innings with a season-best eight punchouts, allowing a single run on four hits with a walk for his first win of 2014.

Ball State’s B.J. Butler (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing three runs on a hit with a strikeout and a walk in an inning of work. BSU starter Scott Baker worked two innings with three hits and a strikeout.

Tyler Jordan and T.J. Weir worked a scoreless final four innings for Ball State, allowing three hits combined.

Kyle Leady and Sam Rector both picked up two-hit days for the Camels in the win, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively, with Rector adding a double. John Reilly also grabbed a hit for Campbell.

Call and Spaulding paced Ball State with two hits apiece.

Next up for the Camels is their Big South opener Friday at Liberty. The Camels and the Flames kick off the series at 3 p.m., and continue Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by Sunday’s finale at 1 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va. CU returns home next Tuesday, March 18, hosting Iona.
