BSB: Duke renews partnership with Durham Bulls

Posted October 16, 2012

— The Duke baseball team has renewed its agreement with the Durham Bulls and will play 18 games in 2013 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, home of the Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.

“Certainly, all of us at Duke are thrilled to continue to play in one of the very best venues in the country for college baseball,” said Duke Vice President & Director of Athletics Kevin White. “This continuing partnership is terrific for both Duke University and the Durham community. Duke and Durham have been together as one for a long time, and this contract extension only enhances that existing relationship. Surely, our student-athletes love to play in such an amazing venue, and our fans enjoy it as well. Under the leadership of new head coach Chris Pollard, we look forward to many more years of exciting Duke Baseball in the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.”

The agreement renewal gives the Blue Devils continued access to one of the finest minor league baseball stadiums in the country. The Durham Bulls Athletic Park, located in downtown Durham, opened in 1995 and has a seating capacity of 10,000. Constructed by George W. Kane Construction and designed by the Durham-based Freelon Group, in association with HOK Sport + Venue + Event – the architects who also constructed Camden Yards in Baltimore, Jacobs Field in Cleveland and Coors Field in Colorado – the DBAP features an old-style manual scoreboard at the base of a 32-foot-high wall in left field deemed “The Blue Monster.” The DBAP’s dimensions begin at 305 feet in left field, 371 feet at left-center field, 400 feet to center field, 373 feet in right-center field and 327 feet down the right field line.

“We could not be more excited about the opportunity to continue our relationship with the Durham Bulls,” said Duke head coach Chris Pollard. “The Durham Bulls Athletic Park is one of the premier baseball facilities in the country; it is truly an honor to play our home games there. Playing downtown offers Duke baseball a tremendous platform from which to market and grow our product. “We are very appreciative of the hospitality that Mr. Goodmon, George Habel, Mike Birling, Scott Strickland, Josh Nance, Scott Carter and the entire Bulls staff have shown us and we look forward to a competing against a great home slate of games in such a first-class facility.”

The 2013 season marks the fourth consecutive year that Duke will play home games at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Jack Coombs Field, located on West Campus and named in honor of Duke coaching legend Jack Coombs, will also be in use by the Blue Devils for several home games and as a practice field.
