— Junior left-hander Hobbs Johnson struck out a season-high nine batters over five scoreless innings of work Wednesday night as No. 1 North Carolina (42-4) downed The Citadel (27-19), 13-0.

Johnson (3-0) held the nation's 30th-best scoring offense to just two hits over his five innings of work as he faced three over the minimum in his 10th start of the year.

Michael Russell and Colin Moran combined to drive in nine runs in the win as Russell set a new career high with five RBIs. Moran set a new single-season career high as his four RBIs ran his total to 74 for the year.

The Rocky Mount, N.C., native retired the first four batters he faced via the strikeout in back-to-back 1-2-3 innings to open the game before his offense took over in the second inning.

Cody Stubbs opened the frame with a double and moved to third on an error before Matt Campbell dropped down a squeeze bunt to score the game's first run.

The error would come back to haunt the Bulldogs as Chaz Frank would reach on an infield RBI single and Landon Lassiter would walk to load the bases for Colin Moran.

The nation's leading RBI man added to his total as he hit his 12th home run of the year and second career grand slam to push UNC's lead to 6-0, five of which were unearned.

The Bulldogs registered their first hit of the night to open the fifth inning and put a runner on second base for the first time with another single. Johnson forced a fly ball to right and struck out the final two batters he would face to end the threat.

Carolina would add another run in the fifth behind singles from Brian Holberton and Michael Russell. Russell's single through the right side would score another Tar Heel run and expand the lead to 7-0.

Without a weekend series looming due to the exam break, left-hander Kent Emanuel threw two scoreless frames of relief for the Tar Heels.

Russell would add on three more runs in the seventh as he blasted his second home run of the year, a three-run shot to push the lead to 10-0.

Two more Bulldog errors in the eighth would help Carolina add three more runs to the final margin of 13-0.

Relief pitchers Chris McCue, Mason McCullough and Trent Thornton combined on two scoreless innings of relief work to close out the win.
