BSB: No. 15 Pack sweeps No. 14 Georgia Tech

Posted April 21, 2013

— No. 15 NC State completed its sweep of No. 14 Georgia Tech with a dramatic 8-7 comeback win on Sunday at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Wolfpack (32-10, 14-7 ACC) won its 14th consecutive game and its 10th in a row in conference play. In nine of those 10 wins, the Pack has had to come from behind. The 14-game winning streak is tied with North Carolina for the longest current winning streak in the nation. The streak is the longest since the Wolfpack won 16 in a row during the 2003 season.

State’s sweep of Georgia Tech (27-13, 11-10) is its first since 1992, and the first ever in Atlanta. The Pack’s only other series win in Atlanta came in 2001.

Brett Williams tied his career high with four hits in the afternoon, the fourth time he has recorded four hits in a game. Grant Clyde went 2-for-5 with a grand slam, a double to represent the tying run in the ninth, four RBIs and two runs. Trea Turner contributed a 3-for-4 effort with two runs and a walk.

Tarran Senay wrapped up his fantastic series with a 1-for-4, one-RBI, one-run outing. Senay finished the weekend with nine RBIs and three runs scored. Wolfpack hitters at the top of the order did their part to help Senay’s production; Senay came to the plate with the bases empty only twice over the entire weekend.

The Pack utilized six pitchers in the ballgame, with Chris Overman (1-0) recording the win as the final pitcher of the day. Overman shut out the Jackets for the final four innings while holding them to two hits, which extends his streak to 20 innings since allowing his last earned run. Dating back to April 25, 2012, Overman has only allowed two earned in 27 2/3 innings for an ERA of 0.65. Georgia Tech reliever Zane Evans (0-1) took the loss on two earned on four hits over the final two innings.

NC State rolled to a 5-0 lead in the top of the third behind Clyde’s grand slam. Turner started the rally with a one-out single. Jake Fincher followed him with a single of his own to put runners on first and second. Brett Austin threaded a 1-2 pitch through the left side, which deflected off of the third baseman’s glove. Turner scored on the play, ruled an error. Senay drew an intentional walk to load the bases, then Clyde cleared the bases with a homer to left.

Tech answered with four runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 5-4. The first two batters of the inning drew walks to set the table. After a double steal, Zane Evans singled to drive in a pair. Daniel Palka followed with a single to put two on for the second time. A sac bunt moved both over, and set up Thomas Smith’s RBI single to make it 5-3. A walk and a hit batsman pushed the final run across.

The Jackets tied the game 5-5 with back-to-back doubles to start the bottom fourth, then took the lead when Smith hit a solo shot to left as the leadoff man in the fifth.

State knotted the score 6-6 in the top of the sixth after another one-out single from Turner. Austin drew a two-out walk to push Turner into scoring position. Senay cashed in the run with an RBI single to center.

Tech retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth, started by a leadoff single from Brandon Thomas. He moved to second on a balk, advanced to third on a fielding error at second and scored on a fielder’s choice.

The Pack had one more rally left in the tank, scoring twice in the top of the ninth to seal the sweep. Clyde led off the inning by smoking a double down the left field line. Williams singled through the left side to score Clyde and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. A sac bunt moved Williams to third and Jake Armstrong’s sac fly to right provided the game-winning run.

NC State returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Davidson at 6 p.m.
