— The Durham Bulls defeated the Duke Blue Devils 2-1 in the first ever Battle in the Bull City Tuesday night, as Ryan Yarbrough, Jeff Ames, and Adam Kolarek held the Blue Devils in check in the friendly exhibition game at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Duke jumped out to the initial lead, scoring a run in the top of the second on a leadoff double by Jack Labosky and a one out, RBI single from Michael Smiciklas. The Bulls responded in the bottom of the fourth, with a leadoff double to right off the bat of Willy Adames and an RBI base hit to center by Jake Bauers to tie the score at 1-1.

Durham took the lead one inning later in the home half of the fifth, when Johnny Field began the frame with a triple off the center field wall and came in on an RBI single to left by Jake Hager for the 2-1 score the Bulls would win by.

Yarbrough started the game and earned the win for Durham, as the left-handed hurler cruised through six innings with one run allowed on four hits, one walk, and six strikeouts on 77 pitches. Blue Devils reliever Luke Whitten took the loss after allowing one run on two hits in his one inning pitched.

Hager led the Bulls batters with a 2-3 game including the game-winning RBI. Bauers finished the night 1-2 with an RBI and a walk, Adames went 1-4 with a double and a run scored, and Field ended the night 1-3 with a triple and a run.

The Bulls open the 2017 season Thursday night in Gwinnett, with a 7:05 pm game against the Braves. The Bulls will return to the DBAP for their home opener on Monday, April 10th, with a 6:05 pm first pitch against the Charlotte Knights.
