Lawrenceville, Ga. — The South Division champion Durham Bulls closed out the regular season with a 3-0 road loss against the Gwinnett Braves on Monday afternoon.
Ronald Acuna swatted an opposite-field, three-run homer in the second innning to account for the only runs of the game. Hunter Adkins (L, 0-1) worked five innings in his second Bulls start, permitting just Acuna's home run to absorb the defeat.
Durham (86-56) managed just five hits, including three by left fielder Shane Peterson.
The Bulls won their 13th South Division title by a whopping 15 games over second place Gwinnett (71-71), and head to the Governors Cup playoffs for the 14th time in their 20 years as a Triple-A club.
Ryan Yarbrough (13-6, 3.43) starts the opener of the best-of-five semifinal on Wednesday night at 6:35 PM ET against the West Division champion Indianapolis Indians. Indy will start RH Clay Holmes(10-5, 3.36) at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Bulls went 6-4 against the Indians in the regular season. Yarbrough faced the Indians once (7IP, 1ER) and took a no-decision, while Holmes (11IP, 2ER) beat the Bulls once and received a no-decision in two starts against the Bulls.
Lehigh Valley, which won the International League wild-card with its sixth straight win on Monday, will host the North Division winner and defending Governors Cup champion Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Rail Riders in the other semifinal.
