Bulls fall to Norfolk in series opener, 2-1

Posted August 20, 2014

— The Durham Bulls dropped the opener of a three-game set to the Norfolk Tides, 2-1 Tuesday night at the DBAP.

Knotted at 1-1 in the top of the eighth inning, Norfolk’s Dariel Alvarez led off with a double and came around to score on an RBI single from Francisco Peguero for the go-ahead run. Durham (67-63) went quietly in the final two frames, seeing its division lead shrink to 7.0 games over the Tides (60-70) with 14 games remaining.

The Bulls scored the game’s first run, as Cole Figueroa walked to lead off the fourth inning, advanced to third on a Mikie Mahtook double and scored on Tim Beckham’s RBI ground out to second base.

Norfolk countered in the top of the fifth though, as Julio Borbon singled to lead off the frame and later scored on Alvarez’s double.

Robert Coello (6-1) earned the win with a pair of scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while Evan Meek earned his 14th save of the season with a scoreless ninth. Cory Burns (1-1) suffered the loss in relief for the Bulls, surrendering a run in the top of the eighth. Durham starter Enny Romero pitched well, allowing just one run on seven hits over six innings, striking out six in the process to earn a no-decision.

The series continues Wednesday, when RHP Matt Andriese (11-7, 3.83) goes for Durham against LHP Chris Jones (7-8, 3.84) for Norfolk. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
