Bulls GM: MLB teams must build from within
Posted April 29
Durham, N.C. — In a wide-ranging discussion with "The World's Strongest Morning Show" on 620 AM The Buzz, Mike Birling, general manager of the Durham Bulls, praised the model of the Bulls parent club, the Tampa Bay Rays, and said more Major League Baseball teams would be wise to build from within. MLB franchises should copy Rays model
"For the bulk of the major league teams, they are going to have to change the way they do things," Birling said, noting that the days of spend and spend and spend are over. "Some organizations just are not going to have the huge TV contracts and the big attendance, so this is the way you can remain competitive."
The Bulls will play a day game Tuesday, scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
"I think our guys are used to it, and with a day off tomorrow, to be able to get out of the ballpark early today and kind of have a day and a half off is good for them," Birling said.
