Bulls rally in Game 2, even series with Pawtucket

Posted September 11, 2013

Durham Bulls defeat PawSox (Sept. 11) 2-1 for Game 2 of the Governor's Cup Finals

— The Durham Bulls came from behind to pull out a 2-1 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox Wednesday in Game 2 of the Governors' Cup Finals at Durham Bulls Athletic Park and even the best-of-five series at one game each.

Offensively, the Bulls again started slow and watched the Red Sox jump out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Dan Butler scored on a groundout by former NC State infielder Jonathan Diaz.

In the sixth inning, the tides changed as the Bulls were able to draw even, taking advantage of Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright's knuckle ball. Jason Bourgeois stood on third with two outs when Wright uncorked a knuckle ball to Shelly Duncan that skipped past Butler, allowing Bourgeois tie the game 1-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Bulls took the lead for good with an RBI double off the bat of Kevin Kiermaier that plated Craig Albernaz. That was the last batter Wright faced as he departed after 6.2 innings, allowing two runs, neither of which were earned.

"That knuckleballer was on," Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo said. "You could tell in the first two innings, you were like, ‘oh no.’”

International League Pitcher of the Year J.D. Martin started Durham pitched six innings of his own, giving up four hits, a walk, and a run.

“I just went out there to throw strikes, get ahead of guys and let the defense do the work. Albernaz called a great game back there and it was awesome,” said Martin, “Our hitters need to hit and if they don’t hit, pitchers need to pitch.”

“J.D. Martin, tonight, he was awesome, he gave us a chance," said Montoyo. "He had no room for error, no room at all."

Bulls reliever’s CJ Riefenhauser and Kirby Yates threw solid to shut out the Red Sox over the last three innings. Riefenhauser got credited with the win in his first appearance in the postseason while Yates earned the save.

“Riefenhauser was huge tonight. That was his best outing of the year," Montoyo said. "He was so good that inning, he was going back. He faced two righties and they had no chance. He was huge.”

The Bulls and Red Sox are scheduled to play Game 3 of the best-of-five series at 7:05 p.m  Friday night at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I. The Bulls will throw breakout starter Matt Buschmann as he goes head-to-head with Pawtucket's Matt Barnes.

The game can be heard live on 620 AM The Buzz.
