Bulls take series finale as Myers heads to the Show

— It was a big day at the DBAP Sunday afternoon, as 9,077 fans celebrated the 25th anniversary of the release of “Bull Durham,” and saw the first-place Bulls win a showdown of division leaders. Durham beat the IL West-leading Indianapolis Indians 5-2 and took a series that had playoff intensity, three games to one.

In what may have been his last hurrah as a Bull, Wil Myers helped give the Bulls a first-inning lead by doubling Brandon Guyer to third and scoring on Chris Gimenez’s two-run, bases-loaded single. It was Gimenez’s first game since May 17, as he was removed from the disabled list earlier in the day.

As clips from the classic movie played between innings, the Bulls’ top prospect received word that he was headed to The Show. Myers was pulled from the game at the start of the third inning, and a short time later, the Tampa Bay Rays announced that he had been promoted to the Major Leagues. Infielder Ryan Roberts will be sent to the Bulls to make room for Myers on the Rays roster.

Indianapolis tied the score on a two-run homer by Andrew Lambo in the second, but the Bulls took the lead back in the third on Guyer’s sixth home run of the season, over the Blue Monster in left.

Cole Figueroa single-handedly gave the Bulls some breathing room, driving in Mike Fontenot in the fourth and stealing home on the front end of a double steal in the sixth.

J.D. Martin (W, 9-3, 2.89) pitched seven innings of four-hit ball, striking out six to regain sole possession of the IL victory lead one day after being caught by Louisville’s Greg Reynolds. Rehabbing Major Leaguer James McDonald (L, 1-2, 6.75) took the loss. Kirby Yates earned his sixth save, including all three wins in the Indianapolis series.

Indianapolis played the game without manager Dean Treanor, who got ejected from the contest while exchanging lineups at home plate before the game.

The Bulls welcome the Louisville Bats for a four game series starting Monday night at 7:05pm.
