Yankees complete sweep of Bulls

In a battle of North Carolina natives, former UNC Tar Heel Adam Warren outdueled Clayton’s Chris Archer to lead the Yankees to a 3-1 victory over the Bulls on Friday night.

Durham was held scoreless until the 8th inning, as Warren allowed only three hits on the evening. With the win, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre completed the series sweep in which the Bulls never held a lead.

Warren, a New Bern native, was absolutely dominant in his return to his home state on Friday night. The right hander who held a 22-2 record at UNC tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits while walking two and striking out four. He was replaced after the 7th inning after tossing 104 pitches.

For the fourth night in a row, the Yankees got on the board early, scoring two in the first inning. Russell Branyan, who has punished the Bulls this week, hit his 4th homer of the series, a solo shot in the third to make it a 3-0 game.

Clayton resident Chris Archer (3-8, 5.04) struck out nine hitters in his six innings of work. He tossed his 7th quality start in the season, despite receiving his 8th loss. Bryan Augenstein replaced Archer in the 7th and held the Yankees bats silent, striking out the side in the eighth. Brandon Gomes finished the game for the Bulls with a perfect ninth inning and has now allowed just one earned run in 21.0 innings this season.

The Bulls threatened in the bottom of the 8th when Shawn O’Malley singled to lead off the inning. After the following two batters flew out, Jesus Feliciano had his first hit of the game to put runners at the corners. Henry Wrigley stepped to the plate, and with a 2-2 count Chase Whitley balked to bring home O’Malley and advance Feliciano to second. Wrigley would go on to strike out to end the inning and the Bulls hopes of a comeback. Durham is now 0-31 when trailing after eight innings.

The Bulls welcome the Toledo Mud Hens, Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, to the DBAP on Friday night. Detroit’s number one prospect RHP Jacob Turner (0-1, 4.30) takes the hill against RHP Shane Dyer (1-1, 5.40). Game time is set for 7:05pm.
