Butch Davis's son transfers from UNC

Drew Davis is the latest member of his family to leave the University of North Carolina. The sophomore quarterback and son of former head football coach Butch Davis will transfer to Coffeyville Community College in Kansas, the school announced Wednesday.

Davis started three years for East Chapel Hill High School, joined the Tar Heels prior to the start of the 2012 season and redshirted.

“I appreciate the opportunity Coach (Larry) Fedora gave me to be a member of the team,” Davis said in a statement.

"I’m looking forward to joining the team in Coffeyville and competing for the quarterback position. Coffeyville has a great track record of taking incoming transfers and preparing them for their next opportunity. I’m looking forward to continuing my growth as a quarterback.”

Fedora called Davis a "great kid" and said he wished him the best.

    Is Redrage2 threatening another poster?

Yes... Butch Davis and Dick Baddour were going to give Drew Davis a "FULL" football scholarship... until Holden Throp found out about it... Butch and Dickie conveniently having left him "out of the loop" on the notion of giving Drew the said scholarship. OK... no problem it seemed, let him be a walk-on. That decision is surely up to the Head Coach- at the time of Drew's freshman year that was the current coach Larry Fedora. Given that Drew Davis was never considered D-I QB potential - why did Fedora agree to that when he has a stable full of legitimate, more or less, QBs and Bryn Renner returning? "Pressure" from someone... if so, who? Certainly Butch could afford Drew's tuition as a walk-on since UNC had already paid him millions as head coach, and that he was continuing to receive his UNC salary after being terminated - in spite of being in a "non-coaching (wink - wink/eye roll) position in the NFL. This "arrangement" even "allowed" Butch to be in a luxury box in Kenan during home games... exactly how did Butch Davis pull all of that off?

Does any of that "not smell right" to anyone other than me? Absolutely NOTHING against Drew Davis - he was an "innocent kid" in all of that mess. But... he was NOT seen as a legitimate NCAA D-1 QB prospect (How many offers did he get?) and I do not believe his academic background was very strong either. IMO - if he wanted to attend UNC and could be admitted as a STUDENT - not as an athlete, and Butch would pay his tuitiion - no problem with me. However, given the circumstances - which appears to have been there was clearly NO need for an additional QB on the team... I would have declined his request to be a "walk-on" for the football team. My opinion!

If Miss Wiley doesn't go with him to Kansas, does Coffeyville know they will need to provide Junior with a tutor to help him organize the subjects in his trapper keeper?

  • I am not who you think I am Aug 1, 2013

watched him play in HS didn't think he had the tools to play at the D-1 level. I wasn't surprised he was given walk-on status at UNC, his daddy and all. Probably best he leaves town really no room on the roster for him

By using his red-shirt last year and going JUCO this year how many years of elgibility does he have left?... 2 at JUCO and 2 at whatever or less

You got it right. He was a walkon.

Wasn't he a walk-on? Seems like when there was talk of giving the coach's son a scholly, it caused an uproar. So he just walked on.

Or am I remembering it wrong?

Well, whether he is a good student or not, his primary motivation is football or else why else would he go to Coffeyville? I get my info/make my conclusions from what direction the kid is actually headed.

If he was academically motivated, no reason to transfer - UNC is a fine academic school. Stop being a troll, and assuming I meant the kid was not a capable student, never said that, only stated he wants to play football.

One thing Wal-Mart UNC fans and State grads have in common? They both got accepted at State.

At least he gets to take his degrees from UNC with him.
