Butch Davis still has Carolina on his mind
Posted August 31
Nearly six years after North Carolina fired him at the start of the yet-to-be-resolved NCAA investigation for improper benefits from agents and academic misconduct, Butch Davis made his Florida International University head coaching debut on Thursday night against the University of Central Florida.
It wasn't pretty. The Panthers got waxed by the Knights under the lights.
While Davis had to take a severe L in the opener, he might have won the internet with his not-so-subtle homage to Tobacco Road on a FIU offensive play card.
At least Davis knew well enough to put NC State's logo on top of North Carolina's logo. It's not like the Tar Heels topped the Wolfpack when he was the head coach in Chapel Hill.
Should I have known Davis was going to give us a nudge-and-wink to his former employer and local ACC foes? I wish I had.
Let's hope the Tobacco Road play card wasn't a one time thing. Davis could have his assistants throw up pictures of Holden Thorp, John Blake, an unpaid parking ticket and a Power Point slide. Another card could feature a picture of a mobile phone and the numbers "2," "1," and "6." The possible combinations are endless.
