Cam Newton to undergo ankle procedure

Posted March 18, 2014

 Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

— Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will undergo an ankle procedure Wednesday, the team confirmed. Newton suffered the injury during a game against the San Francisco 49ers last year and "will require a recovery of approximately four months."

“The ankle was sore after the San Francisco game and we wanted to see if rest would calm it down, but it is still bothering him and the decision was made to address it,” said Panthers head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion.

The surgery will be done by Panthers team physician Robert Anderson.

Newton has played three seasons with the Panthers and has not missed a game since being drafted in the first round out of Auburn. 2013 was his worst statistical season in terms of passing yards, rushing yards and total TDs.

I think that's what Gunny meant, playoffs last year, but not this year. Two consecutive years.

#1? The 3 guys mentioned are the future, but Smith has been the leader for years regardless of age. Hines Ward, Jerome Bettis, Justin Tuck, Ray Lewis have been the leaders in their lockerooms for years and they were winners. Cam and company now have their chance. Now who will Cam throw too? Please don't think abt signing Santonio Holmes.

As good as Steve was and continues to be, at this age I believe Cam, Kuechly and Hardy deserve that #1 spot more than him.

Look at all you whiny babies. So, what if they don't have a stellar season this year? Who says they're not planning for the long haul?

Hope that the doctors can do a thorough job. He should have done this after the season--for sure.

Looks like the Panthers are going to continue their pattern of not making the playoffs for two consecutive years.

Scheduling the surgery now is nuts. Why not do it sooner.

well the panthers got rid of his #1 receiver, what a stupid plan

The Panthers suck!!...they got rid of the best player they had on the team in Steve Smith. This will be a pathetic season.
