Campbell's Thompson closing stellar Camels career

— At 6-foot-6 with a submarine delivery, Campbell pitcher Ryan Thompson stands out. After going almost unnoticed on many college recruiters’ reports in high school, the Camels are glad to have him.

“He's made a huge impact on this program,” said head coach Greg Goff. “Maybe the best to ever come through here.”

Thompson has the stats to back up that bold claim. After boasting a sub-1.00 ERA a year ago, he led the nation in ERA for the majority of this season. Even after one poor outing, Thompson still sits among the elite with a 1.41 mark over 31 appearances entering the final weekend.

“It’s kind of like Nintendo numbers,” said Campbell pitching coach Rick McCarty.

Thompson, who transferred into Campbell after two seasons at Chemeketa Community College, has 14 saves on the year to place him sixth nationally. And despite only being with the program for two seasons, recently became the school’s all-time leader in saves.

With a submarine delivery that nearly scrapes the dirt, Thompson has the ability to be a strikeout pitcher, but is old school in his philosophy of just simply getting outs any way he can.

“I don't really think about stats when I'm out there,” Thompson said. “I stick to the (old) philosophy and try to get ground balls.”

After failing to get the attention out of high school in Turner, Ore., he will undoubtedly be getting it out of college. MLB teams will have their shot the grabbing a tall, end-of the pen Thompson in the first-year player draft on June 5.
