The Carolina Hurricanes assigned defenseman Ryan Murphy on Friday to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Murphy, 20, has totaled two goals and nine assists (11 points) in 39 NHL games with Carolina this season. The Aurora, Ont., native is in his first full professional season since being drafted by the Hurricanes in the first round, 12th overall, of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Murphy (5’11”, 185 lbs.) is eligible to play with Charlotte during the NHL’s Olympic Break.

The Hurricanes host the Ottawa Senators at PNC Arena on Saturday at noon (FOX Sports Carolinas, 99.9 FM The Fan ESPN Radio).

Mikey...that's exactly what I am afraid of. They will start Ward again and by the time they realize that he isn't cutting it, they will have lost any chance to make the play offs. Not that I am terribly optimistic about any post season games, but there is still hope. With Khudobin they have a shot at least.

Ward and his contract are untradeable this year due to the low cap. The only way to trade Ward would be to accept another teams high paid under performer. I think Peters will be gone along with a D man. K and Cam are a good tandem for now with K in the top slot..IMHO

Ward has not proven he can carry a team round after round since we won the cup...and that was a special team that did not need to be carried....we haven't been in the playoffs lately and I would prefer a goalie that can get us to the playoffs over not making the playoffs

Well first things first, Cam is on IR which means until he comes off he can't go anywhere. ANY NHL player on a 1 way deal has to accept a conditioning stint in the AHL and that stint is only for so long. When he is game ready and off the IR at that time they can ask him to accept. Let's not say he is not a team player until then please.

No I am not joking. He played 17 games last year so I am not sure you can extrapolate that out to winning the division or conference over 81 games. Look at his stats instead of being emotional. Even Tripp, the ultimate homer, said he goes to sleep at times and lets in easy goals. I know he is all overthe marketing material but he is just not getting it done.

It is time to pass the torch.

Your joking right? or are you just that naive? You do realize Cam had this team in 1st place last season before he got hurt right? You also know Cam was a leading candidate for the Canadian Olympic Team before he got hurt right? Cam is a number 1 goalie and I can say if we make the playoffs, I want Cam in the Net because he has proven he can carry a team round after round in the playoffs.

First to JScott, What Ward does will be up to the team. What it may come down to is if Ward can play during the Break or not. If he can then I'm sure he will go. Hopefully for Murphy he will be down just a short while, so the Canes can Trade Peters and Harrison together and get rid of them both. Harrison has played like dung every since he came back. Does anyone know why Bellemore isn't playing?

I disagree...Ward should be traded and Khudobin should be the #1. Ward is not a #1 goalie.

I thought Murph was coming along...wasn't impressed with Harrison last night though.
