Canes back on ice with tough stretch ahead

Posted February 24

It was almost all hands on deck as the Hurricanes took the ice Monday. Olympians Alexander Semin and Andrej Sekera skated for their first time since Sochi with the other half of the Olympians are set to rejoin the team Tuesday, hopefully jet-lag free.

"I don't worry about it, it's part of being a pro," says Hurricanes defenseman Andrej Sekera.

The two week Olympic break came at a perfect time for goalie Cam Ward, who has been rehabing from an injury suffered New Years Eve.

"The recovery is completed," said Ward. "I'm ready to go, I was ready to go after I did my stint in Charlotte, now I'm just waiting for my next opportunity."

Even with goalie Anton Khudobin playing lights out in net, coach Kirk Muller said Ward and everyone else will be called upon to contribute from hereon out in this 'numbers game'.

The team is three points out of the eighth and final playoff spot with 25 games in 50 days to go.

"That's our goal for everybody," said Muller. "Players, coaches, the whole organization, trainers, equipment guys, we addressed it today."

"We've put ourselves in a position to be in the mix with a whole lot of teams to get to the playoffs," said Hurricanes captain Eric Staal. "Now, it's about executing here down the stretch."

Unfortunately for the Canes, the toughest stretch of this stretch run starts immediately, with a five-game in eight day road trip that starts in Buffalo then moves on to Dallas, Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Jose.
