Canes' Bickell to retire at season's end

Posted April 8

— Thursday was a busy and emotional day for Carolina Hurricanes forward Bryan Bickell as he played in front of his family and home-crowd fans at PNC Arena for the first time since being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in November.

Saturday was perhaps busier and even more emotional as he was surprised by all his teammates at an MS walk outside of PNC Arena and then told NHL.com of his plans to retire from the NHL.

"As the weeks go on in the month, it's like running low on gas," Bickell told NHL.com. "You just kind of fade off. Some symptoms [have] come, but when you get treatment you feel energized and full of life. Hopefully it will bring a spark [Saturday] and [Sunday]."

Bickell told his teammates of his plans Thursday before breaking down in his postgame press conference. The team will wear No. 29 stickers on their helmets to honor Bickell.

The Canes play St. Louis Saturday in their home finale before closing out the season Sunday at Philadelphia.

Bickell, 31, was a 2nd round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2004 where he won two Stanley Cups (2013 and 2015). On Saturday, Bickell was also awarded the 2016-17 Steve Chiasson Award given annually to the Hurricanes player that best exemplifies determination and dedication while proving to be an inspiration to his teammates through his performance and approach to the game.

"As the weeks go on in the month, it's like running low on gas," he said. "You just kind of fade off. Some symptoms [have] come, but when you get treatment you feel energized and full of life.
