Hurricanes close road trip with 4-2 win at New Jersey

Posted February 12, 2013

FINAL: Hurricanes 4, Devils 2

The Carolina Hurricanes ended their season-long six-game road trip Monday by beating the Eastern Conference leading New Jersey Devils 4-2. The Canes got two goals from Jiri Tlusty, one goal from Patrick Dwyer and Jussi Jokinen and Eric Staal notched an assist to extend his consecutive points streak to 10 games.

Carolina returns home Thursday night as the No. 3 team in the East after posting a 4-1-1 record on the 12-day road trip.

End of 2: Canes 2, Devils 1

Jussi Jokinen scored on the power play just 1:36 into the period and Jay Harrison launched a blast from the point that was tipped in by Pat Dwyer as the Canes turned a one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead after two.

For Jokinen, it was his first goal of the season, for Dwyer it was his fourth. Joe Corvo, Joni Pitkanen and Justin Faulk all have assists as well.

Cam Ward has made 13 saves through two periods while the Canes have put 20 chances on Martin Brodeur.

End of 1: Devils 1, Canes 0

The Hurricanes had what they thought was a penalty kill late in the first period but a review showed that the Devils had scored and an extra 3:18 was put on the clock. That was the lone goal in the first as the Devils lead 1-0.

Ilya Kovalchuck is credited with the goal on the man advantage following Jussi Jokinen's penalty.

The Canes out-shot the Devils in the period 10-6 and had more scoring chances. The Canes have now killed just one of their last six penalty chances.

The Hurricanes will start the second period on a power play after a Jacob Josefson penalty with 2.8 seconds remaining in the period.

20:00 1st: Carolina Hurricanes at New Jersey Devils

Carolina will have no changes to their lineup Tuesday. Just like Monday, Bobby Sanguinetti and Kevin Westgarth will be healthy scratches. Cam Ward will start in net.

Pregame

The New Jersey Devils will try to match their longest winning streak from last season when they host the red-hot Carolina Hurricanes for Tuesday's battle at Prudential Center.

The Devils, who are leading the Eastern Conference with 19 points, have won five straight and are coming off a home-and-home sweep of the rival Pittsburgh Penguins over the weekend.

However, Carolina also enters Tuesday's test on a hot streak, having won three of four and getting at least a point in each of those games (3-0-1). Carolina Hurricanes Logo Carolina Hurricanes schedule

The Hurricanes played Monday evening against the New York Islanders and notched a 6-4 decision to improve to 3-1-1 on the six-game road trip that ends in New Jersey.

Jiri Tlusty scored twice and had two assists during a four-goal third period to help Carolina pull off a comeback win on Long Island. New York held a 3-2 edge after 40 minutes but the 'Canes took control of the game with three unanswered goals in the first half of the third period.

Alexander Semin potted his 200th career goal 5:33 into the final frame to snap a 3-3 tie, while assisting on both of Tlusty's tallies. Eric Staal added a goal and an assist and Cam Ward made 24 saves in the victory.

"I think tonight may have been the best game of the road trip," said Hurricanes head coach Kirk Muller. "We just keep finding ways to win right now." Canes Tracker tn Meet the Carolina Hurricanes

The Devils closed the 2011-12 schedule with a season-best six-game winning streak. That hot streak was a sign of things to come as New Jersey wound up making it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals before being ousted by the Los Angeles Kings.

New Jersey entered its weekend series trailing the Penguins by a point for the Atlantic Division lead, but a pair of 3-1 triumphs has pushed the Devils three points in front of Pittsburgh.

After beating the Penguins on home ice Saturday, the Devils turned in another winning effort Sunday in the Steel City. David Clarkson scored a pair of goals in the finale, as New Jersey jumped out to a 3-0 lead at CONSOL Energy Center before allowing the Pens to score their only goal early in the third period.

"It was a real gutsy effort," Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. "We had to dig deep. We didn't have a lot juice left in the tank and we found a way."

Clarkson already has nine goals on the season after recording a career-best 30 markers in 2011-12.
Ilya Kovalchuk also lit the lamp, while Johan Hedberg turned away 23-of-24 shots. Martin Brodeur, who made 24 saves in Saturday's victory, is expected to be back in the starting role on Tuesday. Carolina Hurricanes Logo More Hurricanes Stories

The Devils have yet to lose a game in regulation on home ice this season, posting a 5-0-1 mark in Newark.

New Jersey has dominated the Hurricanes in recent seasons, winning six of seven and 10 of the last 13 encounters. Carolina has dropped seven in a row and nine of its previous 10 contests in the Garden State.

Carolina, which will host Toronto on Thursday, is 4-2-1 as the guest this season.

Mini-vans don't exist. That is just the biased 'Canes media machine trying to feed you misinformation. Don't believe everything you think or see. Now the 2.5 kids that is completely true. I can only afford to take my 1/2 kid to games though. They still charge us for the seat, but I can share the ticket with one of my friends 1/2 kid. It is awesome. Thanks for supporting one of the most exciting, fastest, and hardest hitting sports in the world.

  • GunnyGoesBaaaarf Feb 12, 8:28 p.m.

Man, these slow starts are going to bite them. They can't always be playing catch up. Would LOVE to see them beat the Devils. There's something about teams with "Devils" in their name.....:)

  • kheffn Feb 12, 6:02 p.m.

I think that would be 4-1-1 since it's a 6 game road trip and this article says they're 3-1-1 before tonight's game. Agree with the sentiment though.
