Canes extend Faulk with 6-year, $29 mil deal

Posted March 24

— The Carolina Hurricanes signed defenseman Justin Faulk, 22, to a six-year contract extension that could earn him $29 million, the team announced Monday.

The  deal will pay Faulk $2.5 million in 2014-15, $3.5 million in 2015-16, $5.5 million in 2016-17 and 2017-18, and $6 million in 2018-19 and 2019-20, for an average annual salary-cap figure of $4.833 million.

“Justin has proven to be among the best young defensemen in the league as confirmed by his selection to the U.S. Olympic team,” said team President and General Manager Jim Rutherford. “He has been and will continue to be the anchor of the Hurricanes’ defense for years to come.”

Faulk is in his third season with Carolina and his third as a pro. Carolina drafted Faulk in the second round, 37th overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

He has scored 16 goals and earned 45 assists (61 points) in 169 games with the Hurricanes, and he led the team in ice time over the past two seasons, averaging 22:50 per game in 2011-12 and 24:00 per game in 2012-13.

This season, Faulk has three goals and 21 assists (24 points) in 65 games and is averaging 23:21 minutes per game.

    "Learn the game before"

Is this your only line? Sheesh. Because someone thinks that the contract is high doesn't equal "move."

While I believe Faulk is part of the future of the Canes, this deal seems a little too long. The only thing I can think of is JR was afraid another team would go after him and offer him a better deal.

WLcat609, I guess you'd be the type that would like to see the Hurricanes go somewhere else and there be no professional team in the triangle. I for one want to see the Canes here for a long long time. Learn the game before you throw stones.

Good news about Faulk, but wow. Can't wait to see where everybody stands on JR stepping down. Personally, I'm glad. I think his recent decision making has been lacking, but at the same time, I wouldn't be able to walk in and do a better job.

I love Faulk but he has not been playing well since the Olympics. I hate these long high dollar contracts JR makes. I too believe you are going to have a hard time selling tickets unless some changes are made.

JR is at it again on this one - I think he should have learned his lesson with the Cam Ward and Eric Staal contracts of the past and some others.

Got news for you, JR, you'd better start putting a better product on the ice or you will have fewer fans to help pay for this contract.
