Canes Pitkanen out for remainder of season

Posted April 3, 2013

— Joni Pitkanen, injured Tuesday night in a Carolina Hurricanes loss to the Washington Capitals, has a broken heel and will miss the remainder of the season, the team announced Wednesday morning.

It is the second extended injury absence for the defenseman, 29, who returned March 15 from a month-long recovery from a lower-body injury. He has played just 22 games and has a single goal and eight assists on the season.

Pitkanen left Tuesday night's game with 1:57 left in the second period. He went hard into the boards trying to beat an icing call and was taken off the ice on a stretcher.

On Wednesday, team General Manager Jim Rutherford confirmed Pitkanen had broken his left heel. The estimated recovery period is 10 to 12 weeks.

The Canes, sitting third in the Southeast Division, have 13 games remained in the lockout-shortened season.

Some good observations posted already. Would just add my 2 cents on icing...they MUST go to no-touch...crazy to get hurt just racing to touch the puck sitting by a wall.

  • anti-Hans Apr 3, 2013

I am sorry to see anyone get hurt. That is awful. But defense has been our problem all year and Pitkanen has been a big part of the poor defense. Check out the record - when Pit was hurt earlier we were winning. Since his return we have lost 8 of 9.

I wanted to see Pitkanen out of here since last year. His multi year contract for huge $$$$$ never made any sense to me. With that being said, I hate to see any player get injured in such a manner. Hope he can continue with his hockey career...just in another city!

    We traded Useless Jokinen

  • McLovin Apr 3, 2013

well...the canes are clearly not going to make the playoffs...which is disappointing...once again the Canes can not live up to expectations

This is something JR really has to think about. Skinner is skating as a player with concussion prone syndrome. He will either bounce back from it and take the chance on his career ending soon, or he can continue to play it safe and be a mediocre player not playing to his potential. He's in a tough situation both ways.

  • StunGunn Apr 3, 2013

Hate the Pitkanen got injured. I don't agree with trading Skinner - guy has too much going for him, and who wouldn't be cautious after suffering two concussions. Skins will get his confidence back, he's a keeper.

  • babedan Apr 3, 2013

atc2, you need to become a Caps fan, you expect way to much from a youngster. Skinner is still learning the game in the NHL. He is getting stronger and stronger every year and his upside is way more than his downsize. Maybe you should try watching the game for a change instead of just guessing what a player should be doing.

You have hit the nail on the head atc. Definitely no hustling or hitting from this team. And to think that JR let Allen go. Big mistake. Might want to think about packing his own bags.

  • atc2 Apr 3, 2013

Not a surprise, another Rutherford mistake bringing in Joni (this guy is ALWAYS injured and he has one pass in his arsenal).
I agree with one of the comments: J Staal was not hustling. Right now, this is an awful second line (and Dwyer is NOT a second line player). Time to trade Skinner (always on ice and always getting knocked off the puck) - Skinner for Bobby Ryan. JR, this is not a family business, time for you to go or get rid of this non physical, non hustling players!!! Special teams are pathetic
