Canes place Ward on IR, activate Gleason
Oct 25, 2013
The Carolina Hurricanes placed goaltender Cam Ward on injured reserve Friday, less than 24 hours after he suffered a lower-body injury in a 3-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild.
On Friday, the Hurricanes also announced that they have activated defenseman Tim Gleason from IRa and placed Brett Bellemore (lower body) on IR in a correlating move.
Team officials said Thursday that Ward is expected to miss three to four weeks. He was injured 4:07 into the first period. Gleason has yet to appear in a game this year for the Hurricanes after suffering a concussion in a preseason game against Montreal on Sept. 21.
Backup goaltender Justin Peters closed out Thursday's loss to the Wild, and the team on Friday that they recalled Mike Murphy from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League on an emergency basis.
Murphy, 24, is 1-2-0 with a 3.81 goals-against average in 2013-14 for Charlotte. He has made two appearances with the Hurricanes, not allowing any goals in 36 minutes.
For Gleason, his next start will be his 600th in the NHL having spent eight of his 10 professional seasons in Carolina. The 30-year-old form Clawson, Mich., ranks fourth in franchise history in games played by a defenseman.
The Hurricanes return to the ice Friday evening when they visit the Colorado Avalanche (9 p.m., Fox Sports South).

I like Cam, but he's never been an above average goalie. His numbers, when he isn't hurt which is rare, are average. Giving up more than 3 goals per game and a save percentage of less than .900. That puts him squarely in the middle of the pack of NHL goalies and that's been true for years. If you have evidence to the contrary, please provide it.Cam is far from finished, hes is still a above average goalie, staals have to step up!- Posted by giantfan1956

RE: Canes place Ward on IR, activate GleasonYes, he wasn't touched and didn't even fall awkwardly. Either he's not in shape or not cut out to be a goalie. Either way, he needs to be replaced...too much money for someone who is always hurt. Too bad because he's a good guy.

What exactly happened to him?- Posted by luvbailey
It LOOKED like a groin injury...he stretched weird to stop a puck, and then just crumpled. No one touched him.
But it does seem 'de ja vu' with our two goalies out. Tough breaks again!! Peters has some work to do, hopefully the lines will back him up though! It can't be all up to the goalie...he's the last line of defense, not the first.
Just hoping K comes back soon.
