Canes recall G Khudobin from Charlotte

Posted December 31, 2013

Anton Khudobin (31) makes a save during the Flyers vs. Hurricanes game on October 6, 2013 in Raleigh, NC.

— Ahead of Tuesday night's game against Montreal, the Carolina Hurricanes recalled goaltender Anton Khudobin from Charlotte.

Khudobin, 27, played two games during his conditioning stint with the Checkers, going 1-1 with a 3.03 goals-against average and .928 save percentage. He was named first star of Charlotte’s game on Monday night, stopping 41 shots in the Checkers’ 3-2 win at Rockford.

Despite the recall, Cam Ward is expected to make his second consecutive start in net for the Canes Tuesday. Ward is 14-8-3 all-time against Montreal.

Khudobin played three games this season for the Hurricanes, going 2-0-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and .929 save percentage before suffering an ankle injury on Oct. 13 against Phoenix.

Born in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, Khubobin has a career NHL record of 16-5-0 with a 2.03 goals-against average and .932 save percentage in 24 games with Minnesota, Boston and Carolina.

The Hurricanes, looking to end a five-game winless streak, host the Canadiens Tuesday at PNC Arena at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on 99.9 The Fan ESPN Radio with Mike Maniscalco hosting the Stormfront and aftermath before and following the contest.

I say move Ward due to his cap salary and that he has maybe put together one consistent season in his career. Honestly, I don't think Ward is even tradable with a 6.3M salary for two more years. Dobby is likely the future goalie and Peters would be an viable backup. The team has to get less top heavy on salary if has any chance of filling out the second and third lines.

GK got hurt skating all alone in open ice...not sure he has long term potential. Agree with dvd...the team seams to play worse with Ward in goal. That 1st goal 2 nights ago was unacceptable.

Ward has played his whole career for the team that drafted him. Ever since that kick save on during the Stanley cup finals he has been held on a pedestal.Everyone forgot about Martin Gerber keeping us in at the top of the standings that year.

At this point I think a change of venue may do his career good. A good motivation to refine his skills as a leading goal tender.

The team won't play at 110% if they don't trust their goalie to stop those soft goals he gives up so often.

I agree jGunn But who would take him with his salary unless the Canes agreed to pay a lot of it?

Ward needs to play his 3 or 4 games with the Checkers. It amazes me that most of those who have... View More

I fit into the category of being "pro-Ward". It took until this season to make me say out loud that he isn't the player he was in '06. I think the world of Ward, and I don't know what is going on behind the scenes - is he injured?, but he hasn't been able to play well on a consistent basis. Injuries may be playing a role in his struggles, but the bottom line is, he hasn't been playing up to the level needed.

Considering this years CAP and Ward's salary he would be very difficult to trade. We would most definitely need to take another teams high paid under performer. I agree with the Peters and a player move as the most likely....should be interesting

Peters has been stellar this season when called upon. If anyone should be sent down to Charlotte it is Ward. He has been anything but dependable thus far.

I would rather see Khudobin or Peters. Spare us Ward, please. He needs some one on one time... View More

No way Ward goes to Charlotte.

Seems like the timely move would be to get rid of the General Masnager NOW....before we get in to trading season / draft, etc. That way he couldn't screw up everything for next season....Oh...I forgot. He has already screwed up everything!!!

Ward needs to play his 3 or 4 games with the Checkers. It amazes me that most of those who have been totally pro Ward are now admitting that he needs to go. Everyone sees this, but Canes management. His contract states that he must agree to a trade, but would he really insist on staying on a team that doesn't want him.
