Canes sign Komisarek, Khudobin to one-year deals

Posted July 5, 2013

The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to terms with defenseman Mike Komisarek and goaltender Anton Khudobin on one-year contracts. The deal will pay Komisarek $700,000 during the 2013-14 season and Khudobin $800,000.

“Mike faced different circumstances and expectations in Toronto than he will in Carolina, and we feel that he has a better chance to succeed with our team,” said Rutherford. “He adds size, physicality and leadership qualities to our defensive corps, and is a good penalty killer.”

Komisarek, 31, appeared in just four NHL games with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2012-13, also appearing in seven American Hockey League (AHL) games with the Toronto Marlies.

The West Islip, NY, native has totaled 14 goals, 63 assists (77 points) and 663 penalty minutes in 519 career NHL games with Montreal and Toronto. He established career highs in goals (4), assists (15) and points (19) during the 2006-07 season with Montreal, and led the NHL in hits (266) and ranked second in blocked shots (227) in 2007-08.

Montreal’s first-round selection (7th overall) in the 2001 NHL Draft, Komisarek (6’4”, 235 lbs.) was a starter at the 2009 NHL All-Star Game and was named to the 2010 United States Olympic team, but was unable to participate due to injury. He was Montreal’s nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 2008, and was voted by his Maple Leafs teammates as Toronto’s candidate for the 2010 King Clancy Trophy, honoring the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy contribution in his community.

Prior to turning professional, Komisarek played two seasons at the University of Michigan, earning 46 points (15g, 31a) with 147 penalty minutes in 81 games. He has represented the United States in international competitions including the World Junior Championship (2001, 2002) and the World Championship (2006, 2011).

“Anton proved to be a very capable NHL backup for the Bruins last year,” said Rutherford. “This solidifies an elite goaltending tandem for the Hurricanes.”

Khudobin, 27, went 9-4-1 with a 2.32 goals-against average and .920 save percentage in 14 games with the Boston Bruins during the 2012-13 season. Originally from Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, he also appeared in 26 games for Atlant Moscow Oblast of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) during the NHL work stoppage, going 6-14-4 with a 2.96 goals-against average and .912 save percentage in 26 games played.

Drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the seventh round, 206th overall, of the 2004 NHL Draft, Khudobin (5’11”, 203 lbs.) has appeared in 21 career NHL games with Minnesota and Boston, going 14-5-0 with a 2.03 goals-against average, .933 save percentage and two shutouts.

Khudobin has represented Russia at several international competitions, earning a goal medal at the 2004 U18 World Championship and silver medals at the 2005 and 2006 World Junior Championships (U20). Khudobin was the ECHL’s Goaltender of the Year in 2008, after going 20-1-4 with a 1.98 goals-against average in 27 games with the Texas Wildcatters, and spent part the following season with Carolina’s ECHL affiliate, the Florida Everblades.

    From Yahoo.

    Anton Khudobin, Carolina Hurricanes

    Teams donâï¿

;½t need to spend over a million on a backup goalie, especially when the starter eats up considerable salary. So good on the Carolina Hurricanes for bringing in Anton Khudobin from the Boston Bruins at one year and just $800,000, which is less than what he made last season. Thatâï&iques

t;½s a solid goalie with some untapped potential, taking a pay cut with Carolina. sounds like a good signing.

Canes are limited this off-season after signing guys to multi-year deals during the regular season. They may as well be tight with the money and stick to 1 year deals at this point.

He played in the AHL because he was on bad terms with the coach. He is an NHLer. Should bolster our "D".

Great pick up for the money. Let's hope he can overcome last years injuries and help us on the back end. Low risk here. Well hated and should add SOME toughness.

Wow!!!!!all NHL teams are wheeling and dealing and we bring in a retread to bolster our defense. We did not make the playoffs and thus far we bring in a minor league player to take us to the Stanley Cup. Here we go again, money, money, Money!!!!!!

Looks like a defensive improvement - not that he scores that much based on his past numbers but will possibly 'stay at home' and give Cam some help to prevent the other teams from scoring. Hope so - need to get the defensive end fixed once and for all.

    Adios, Joe!
