Canes Corner

Malhotra's 2nd chance should spur Canes face-off success

Posted October 31, 2013

Once again, the injury bug has bitten the Carolina Hurricanes harder than the team had hoped.

On Thursday, the team placed Jeff Skinner and Radek Dvorak on injured reserve, depleting the forward ranks for the NHL club. The organization will turn to veteran Manny Malhotra who was in Charlotte on a 25-game professional tryout with the Checkers. The organization inked the center to a one year deal worth $600,000 at the NHL level.

Malhotra has taken a different road to get to the Triangle than most vets travel.

Malhotra has appeared in 864 National Hockey League games, but on March 16, 2011, in a freak but horrific accident, he was struck on his left eye by a puck while playing for Vancouver. His recovery required surgery to repair the damage.

He appeared in 78 games during the 2011-12 season, but just 9 games last season. He was placed on injured reserve a month into the season last year by Vancouver GM Mike Gillis, who felt that Malhotra could be in danger playing in the NHL with the speed of the game and the impairment to his vision.

In several reports, Malhotra agreed that the Vancouver general manager had the player’s best interests at heart, but he believed he could still play and wished to pursue his career. That desire led him to accepting an offer to tryout with the Checkers.

He did not record a point in 8 games with the Checkers but has always been regarded as a face-off specialist. Malhotra won 22 of 29 draws in his first two games in Charlotte. Being able to bring those numbers to the NHL club will help the Hurricanes immediately, as none of the regular slotted centers are above 50 percent in the faceoff circle this season.

Radek Dvorak and Jeff Skinner are the only Hurricane players above 50 percent on draws this season.

Malhotra also brings the reputation of leader and team player. In just eight games in Charlotte he made an impact on younger players there with how he carried himself. In one instance Malhotra helped his new teammate Brendan Woods recover a medal given to him by his grandfather by purchasing a metal detector to go help look for the lost item.

The 33-year-old was a first-round draft pick of the New York Rangers back in 1998, the seventh overall selection of that year’s entry draft. He has scored 108 goals with 170 assists in 14 NHL seasons.

A Craigslist reset?!? Ouch, but you have a point, it does seem like the typical half-desperate midseason gap-filler we often go for...a damaged-goods "character" guy who scores very little while Tripper goes on and on about his "locker room presence." More importantly, I thought Skinner just tweaked his wrist?! How long is he going to be out?? Seems like he was coming back around and would be a bright spot. What the heck is it with this team and injuries??

Actually in general the Canes score enough usually to win, the problem is keeping the other teams pucks out of our net. Anytime you score 2 or more goals in a game you should be able to win.

So the Canes now hope to get more faceoffs with this move.....they don't pass the puck well and we all know they have lots of 'skaters' (and this is one more such) but lack SCORING capability. Guess the team plan now is to adopt a 'keep away' or puck control game - heavens knows, the Canes have enough 'puck moving' defensemen!!!!JR, what's nest - perhaps a trade or two?

Once again our bargain basement GM goes shopping for players on Craig's List.

This is unbelievable! Trade players like Sutter and Jokinen to Pittsburgh - not to mention many others who've been traded away...and for what? When you start paying to bring in NHL caliber players I'll start waisting $15 to park my car for 3 hours to watch a Canes' home game.

You guys are numnuts, if he can bring the faceoff numbers even close to what he had when he was with tne Canucks he is definitely worth 600K a year. Yes we need a goalie and I'm not sure DiPietro is it, but this is not a bad temporary move while our two leading faceoff people are on IR. We are not going to get Miller for anything we can afford.

  • juniorsk831 Oct 31, 4:45 p.m.

    We need Ryan Miller!

Yet another 'scrap heap' acquisition by JR.....Canes are hurting in the goalie department so they go out and sign a center...???? I hope PK soon wakes up and sees the handwriting on the wall and the Canes 'clean out' the admin positions. This summer the Colorado Avalanche did JUST THAT and look where the Avs are right now...get your tickets now for the November 12th Canes home game and watch some REAL hockey!

Oh, good... another "no-name" player that has bounced around the league like a lost soul. So, is this guy a wanna-be or a has-been? Either way, I don't understand why the Hurricanes keep trading away good players and picking up non-contributors.

  • jscott13 Oct 31, 3:33 p.m.

I thought we needed a goalie.

  • Wags Oct 31, 3:19 p.m.

The eight ames he played with the Checkers this year he had zero points. just one more guy that won't help the team.
