Canes' Staal progressing from injury

— After sitting out the past few games, Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal skated Sunday and was in a normal practice jersey. Staal was allowed full contact at the morning skate and head coach Kirk Muller said that they will wait to see how he feels before making a decision on his status Monday against Calgary.

Staal said that the lower body injury was something he needed to rest, skating is a big part of his game and if he is not able to or feel comfortable with that, he would be more if a detriment to the team than a help.

Staal jokingly added that there was one positive about the injury: he didn't have to sit through the snow storm in Buffalo.

Veteran Manny Malhotra was given the day off from practice Sunday. Muller said that in the second half of the season, they will rely on certain guys to play extra minutes and some players will be given extra rest when time in the schedule allows. That is  even more exaggerated with a compressed schedule due to the upcoming Olympics in Sochi.

With Malhotra held out of practice, Muller adjust the 3rd and 4th lines. Jiri Tlusty was on a line with Elias Lindholm at center and Radek Dvorak on the opposite wing. Tuomo Ruutu was on the fourth line with Riley Nash and Drayson Bowman.

Muller said Sunday he is happy with the depth of the organization. He mentioned the contributions of Zach Boychuk and Brett Sutter helping the team during the 5-game winning streak.

Carolina, winners of five of their last six games, will play their next three games at home starting with a Monday contest against Calgary.

Not sure why they're rushing him back. They seem to be playing better without him.

    I had the same thought.

I guess Mike Maniscalco misses him (gets paid to) nobody else does.

Some real fair weather fans posting here today. Staal has won a lot of games for us over the years.

Wrong. I'm not a hurricanes fan at all. Just a neutral observer.

I have followed this team for years and have never been a Staal fan. He's a great person, but I wish that he was a more dynamic leader...and a more physical player. Just my opinion...

hmm, I'm at every single game cheering the team on so you can take your name-calling somewhere else. You can take Eric Staal somewhere else too.

The players do. That's why he's the captain. You may go to the games, but you don't know what you're looking at. He's one of the hardest working guys in the league and very tough to move off the puck. You can go somewhere else and we'll keep Eric.

Unless you have been on this team, then you don't know what goes on either. Of course, the guys love Staal. Nobody has ever said that they don't. He is a great person, but note how different he is from the previous captain, Brind'amour. He worked harder than anyone has ever worked. He play was physical and he wore his emotions on his sleeve. Staal is too passive...tonight someone was punching at him, but he turned away. Hit back or at least get up in the guy's face!

Meant to say..Brind'amour worked harder than anyone has ever worked. And the team didn't pick Staal for their captain...very few of them were even here when he was chosen. Management picked him.
