The Carolina Hurricanes, seeking a revival to their season, traded Kevin Westgarth to Calgary Monday in exchange for Greg Nemisz.

Nemisz, 23, is a former first-round draft pick of the Calgary Flames and made his NHL debut in 2011. A forward, he has skated in just 15 games at the NHL level, recording one assist. He also played for Team Canada in the 2010 World Junior Championship where he scored one goal in six contests.

The Canes said Monday that Nemisz will report to Charlotte to play with the Checkers of the AHL.

“Greg is a young player and a former first-round pick that we hope will continue to develop into a solid NHL player,” said Hurricanes President and General Manager Jim Rutherford. “We thank Kevin for his time with the Hurricanes and wish him well.”

In 32 games this season with Abbotsford, Nemisz has tallied nine points (four goals) while skating at a plus-5. Two of his goals have come on the power play.

Westgarth, 29, was set to become a free agent with Carolina at the end of the year and was earning $725,000 this season with the Hurricanes. He has not registered a point on the year while skating at a minus-2 in 12 games.

Nemisz contract with Calgary also paid him $725,000 as a non-roster player. He was set to become a restricted free agent at season’s end.

$3.6 is plenty for an upper tier forward. And unless they're going to sign a UFA right now at an overpaid price, they'd have to trade somebody which would wash out part of the cap hit. I really don't see Rutherford signing an $8 million player during the season, so the Wesgarth move really doesn't do much for them this season.

3.6 mil current space.. this adds 725k to that space giving the canes another shot at a 4mil a year player. over-all its a good trade for the organization if they were to choose to go after just one star player at some point.

I'm sure Bob Hartley will love having Westgarth!

I'm surprised that it took the Canes Brass this long to make a move - where have they been and what were they watching? Does this trade mean - 1) future trade of one Canes player for two from trading partner team? 2) Boychuk to stay on Canes roster (keep in mind tha Nemisz was assigned to Charlotte)?

Goalie situation resolution next JR? My suggestion would be to wave Cam Ward if possible.

Cap space? Wesgarth was only making $725k. They've got more than enough room without moving him to get somebody good.

Not sure why they need a revival to their season. They seem to be right where they aim for every year....mid to upper lower half.

The Canes signed Kevin for one reason with two parts: (1) Not what he does when he is on the ice, but rather what the other team will NOT do when he is on the ice. Part 2: He will knock your head off if the other team keeps doing what they were doing before he was on the ice.

With the Canes focus on avoiding the fighting / defensive enforcing style of hockey, players like Westgarth and Gleason are not within the game plan now. The Canes have received a lot of production from the newer players and with lower cap hits.... Time to lighten the load as they move to sign the current RFA/UFA's after this season ends. If they can pick up current or future production in the trade, then they achieve more in the trade than lightening the load.

This is a great trade for Westgarth.

725k freed up at the NHL level.
Westgarth... good guy, yes, but zero production for 725k, sitting in the seats watching with the rest of us on most nights.
Nemisz sent to the AHL = salary not counting against the NHL level cap.
Why is that so hard to understand?
Everyone wants a blockbuster. They won't all be and can't all be blockbusters.
    Good job J.R.
