Canisius quiets NC State bats in opener

Posted February 16

— Canisius took a lead on No. 5 NC State just two batters into the game Sunday and never looked back in a 3-0 win to open the season at Doak Field.

Lead-off hitter Mike Krische doubled to left to start the game for the Golden Griffin and came around to score as the following hitter, Jesse Kelso, dropped one in front of a diving Bubby Riley in left.

Canisius put eight more runners aboard off of NC State starter Carlos Rodon over the next five innings, crossing the plate once in each of the third and fifth innings.

For the second consecutive year, Rodon was saddled with the opening day loss as he saw his career record in February dip to 2-2. The 6-foot-3 lefty gave up three runs, just one earned, over six innings while striking out six and walking one. He also hit three batters and his defense made two errors behind him.

"My command overall today was inconsistent," Rodon said.

Junior Trea Turner provided nearly all the Wolfpack offense in the loss going 3-for-4, twice reaching base to lead off an inning, and adding a stolen base. The No. 2 through No. 6 batters in the order followed with a combined 2-for-22 day that included five strikeouts and five runners left on base.

"We have to re-evaluate our lineup," head coach Elliot Avent said. "Trea can't do it by himself. And it's not about the 0-fer's, it's about quality at-bats and we didn't get those."

Dating back to last season, NC State has now been held scoreless for 24 consecutive innings, including being shut-out in back-to-back games.

Canisius starter Rohn Pierce went seven innings, striking out six, to earn the win. Alex Godzak threw the final two for the save.

Andrew Woeck threw three scoreless innings of relief for the Wolfpack, striking out four.

NC State started three true freshmen - first baseman Kyle Cavanaugh, third baseman Andrew Knizner and right fielder Garrett Suggs. Riley, who started in left, transferred this year to Raleigh from Delgado Community College.

"We are asking basicically everybody but myself to do something new this year," Turner said. "We have a lot of room to grow. We can have better at bats and defensively we can grow."

NC State and Canisius wil lplay again Monday at 1 p.m. at Doak Field. Admission will be free.

Should not have had the team shoveling snow 1-2 days before a game. They're in shape, but someone could pull a muscle too easily. Played like they were tired and sore.

In a preseason TV interview Coach Avent said he didn't think the Wolfpack would go undefeated this season. I'll bet at that time, he didn't think the first loss would come this soon!

Perhaps the pack players were doing too much reading of the press clippings and too much talk of the 'O' goal. Tthe 'no W' in this one should one should be a very good 'wake up' call! Maybe the pack should forget about the 'O' and really focus on one game at a time - if all goes well the 'O' will then take care of itself.
