— The Carolina Hurricanes have traded right wing Zac Dalpe and center Jeremy Welsh to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for right wing Kellan Tochkin and a fourth-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, the team announced early Sunday.

Tochkin, 22, tallied 44 points (15g, 29a) in 56 games with the Missouri Mavericks of the Central Hockey League in 2012-13.

Originally signed by Vancouver as an undrafted free agent on July 27, 2009, the 5-foot-10 Tochkin played four season in the Western Hockey League with Everett, Medicine Hat and Prince Albert. He totaled 243 points (91 g, 152a) in 253 games before turning professional.

Dalpe leaves the Hurricanes after spending last season between Raleigh and Charlotte, where he played for the Checkers of the American Hockey League. He had two goals and 10 assists in 10 games with Carolina.

Welsh tallied one assist in five games with the Hurricanes in 2012-13.

The Hurricanes also announced on Sunday that forward Chris Terry has been reassigned to the Checkers, pending him clearing waivers at 12 p.m. Monday.

The Carolina Hurricanes open their 2013-14 season on Oct. 4 at PNC Arena against the Detroit Red Wings.

This trade thins the Forward ranks and appears to open $850K of cap space for the Canes. Hopefully an indication they are about to sign Dvorak.
