Chapel Hill, N.C. — Theo Pinson announced on Wednesday that he has committed to North Carolina.
The 6-6, 180-pound wing from High Point (N.C.) Wesleyan Christian Academy made his decision known at a mid-day event at his school.
Pinson's announced finalists were Duke, Georgetown, Indiana, Louisville and North Carolina. He also considered offers from Ohio State, UConn, Tennessee and many ACC schools.
Pinson, a member of the Class of 2014, has been a heralded prospect since he entered high school. His first contact with UNC was in the spring of 2011, as he was completing his freshman year, and his first visit to Chapel Hill followed shortly thereafter.
It'd be the first of his many trips to UNC. Pinson attended multiple Tar Heel games during both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, plus made two additional campus stops last fall.
Roy Williams began personally evaluating Pinson in late 2011, but it was during the summer of 2012 that stellar play affirmed the in-state standout as a priority recruit for UNC. Williams watched Pinson's All-Tournament weekend at the prestigious Nike Global Challenge in July 2012, including a stellar 23-point, 10-rebound outing matched up against No. 1-ranked Andrew Wiggins. That Monday evening (July 16), Roy Williams called to offer a scholarship.
Williams closely tracked Pinson for the remainder of the 2012 summer, attended two of his games during the 2012-13 high school season, and he remained a priority recruit this spring. UNC coaches attended all of his games during the two April 2013 Evaluation Period weekends, with Roy Williams courtside for a Pinson game every day he was at an EYBL event.
In terms of the other schools that were seriously involved, Pinson only taken one official visit during his recruitment - to Indiana in February. That was his second trip to Bloomington and arguably no school recruited Pinson harder than the Hoosiers. Pinson made multiple trips to Duke over the past two years, plus one visit to Georgetown this past season (after which he drove to Chapel Hill to attend the UNC-Duke game that evening).
Pinson led Wesleyan C.A. to the 2013 NCISAA 3A state championship, the school's first title since 1993. The Greensboro native attended Oak Ridge (N.C.) Military Academy for his freshman season.
Pinson becomes the third member of UNC's 2014 recruiting class -- joining point guard Joel Berry and forward Justin Jackson -- all of whom are ranked in the Scout.com Top 20.
LMATHTO at the "Ring Shine" boy. Hey, "Ring Shine" boy, go get your shine box, Roy's 2 Natty rings need some polishing up. Chop, chop...Roy has had his share of great recruits, just can't do anything with them... really disappointed the good ole boyz of the Ramz club would tolerate that, but I guess with the investigation of the football maybe oozing over to round ball kinda holds them back- Posted by Boogalooboy
