Coaching 101: Techniques and coverage schemes
Sep 30, 2013
This week's Coaching 101 breaks down linemen techniques and different coverage schemes.
A technique describes how the defensive lineman lines up on the line of scrimmage in relation to the offensive lineman across from him. There are 0-7 and 9 techniques. The 0 technique is when the d-lineman is lined up straight across from the center. Then it goes down the line from there, the 1 technique is when the lineman is lined up just to the side of the center, or the shade of the center. The inside shade of the guard would be a 2-I technique, head up on the guard would be a 2 technique.
The outside shoulder of the guard would be a 3 technique and it continues down as each shade, head-up and outside is labeled. Each head-up is labeled with an even number, each outside is labeled with an odd number. For whatever reason, that apparently goes back to Bear Bryant, the tight end's associated lineman is labeled differently. The inside shoulder of the tight end's blocker is a 7, head-up is a 6 and the outside shoulder is a 9 technique.
We'll go into some coverage schemes as well to show man-to-man and zone blocking. So make sure you watch through til the end!
