Coaching 101: What is the zone read?

Posted October 7, 2013

Announcers have started to really use the phrase 'zone read', but what is it exactly?

The zone read is an option offense that uses the quarterback and the halfback. The quarterback reads the move of either a defensive end, linebacker or lineman, depending on which defensive player is left unblocked, and decides whether to hand the ball off to the halfback or run himself.

The rest of the offensive players zone block. There are inside and outside zone plays that are used in the zone read.
