NCAA Game Summary - LSU at Massachusetts

(Tuesday, November 12th)

Final Score: Massachusetts 92, LSU 90

Amherst, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chaz Williams scored 24 points and dished out nine assists to lead UMass over LSU, 92-90, at the Mullins Center.

Sampson Carter added 17 points and six rebounds and Cady Lalanne tallied 16 points with six boards for the Minutemen (2-0), who overcame some sloppy play down the stretch to win its second game of the season.

Johnny O'Bryant played most of the game in foul trouble, but still tallied 23 points and 11 boards for the Tigers (0-1). Andre Stringer added 21 points and Jordan Mickey had 16 points and 10 boards for LSU, which may have handed this game to UMass at the free-throw line.

The Minutemen hit 28-of-40 free-throw attempts, while the Tigers hit just 15-of-25 from the stripe.

Leading 77-76 with over seven minutes left in the game, UMass scored seven of the next nine points to take control. Lalanne scored four points during the burst, capping it with a layup at the 5:24 mark.

The Tigers drew within 88-85 thanks to sloppy play by the Minutemen, as Malik Morgan stole the ball and Stringer hit a layup with 22 seconds left. However, Carter hit four free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

UMass used a 16-6 burst to build a 28-18 lead in the first half. Derrick Gordon's free throw with 6:45 left in the stanza capped the run, but LSU answered over the next two minutes as O'Bryant's jumper with 5:19 drew the Tigers within 30-27.

UMass continued to hold a slim edge the rest of the half and Williams' three- pointer with just five seconds left in the frame sent the Minutemen into the locker room with a 49-45 lead.

The Minutemen extended to a 69-59 lead with nearly 7 1/2 minutes elapsed in the second half, taking advantage of O'Bryant having to leave the game with his fourth foul. However, LSU didn't go away despite O'Bryant on the bench and drew within 75-74 after a Shavon Coleman layup with 9:10 left.

Raphiael Putney ended with 14 points, nine boards and two blocks for UMass.
