Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Quincy Diggs came off the bench to pour in 21 points as the Akron Zips defeated the Ball State Cardinals, 72-68, in the inaugural Mid-American Conference bout of the 2013-14 campaign for both sides at Worthen Arena.

Demetrius Treadwell contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals for Akron (9-5, 1-0 MAC), which also received nine points from Nick Harney. The victory was the third in a row for the Zips.

Ball State (3-9, 0-1) was led by Chris Bond, who tallied 18 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor. Majok Majok recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 boards while Jesse Berry netted 12 points. Mark Alstork added 10 points for the Cardinals as they lost for the eighth time in nine games.

BSU was limited to just 33.3 percent efficiency from the field and committed nine turnovers in the first half. Despite connecting on only 2-of-13 attempts from beyond the arc, the Zips took a 34-28 lead into the break after they shot 12-of-24 from inside the 3-point line.

The Cardinals refused to go away in the second half and Majok gave them 47-45 lead with just over 11 minutes left in regulation with a pair of made free- throw attempts. Akron answered right back as Jake Kretzer made a jumper on the next possession and Deji Ibitayo knocked down a 3-pointer on the Zips' next possession to put the visitors in front for good. Akron shot 42.9 percent from the field despite going 1-of-10 from 3-point range in the second period.

BSU came up short despite earning a 42-35 edge in the rebounding battle. Akron finished the contest with 10 assists to eight turnovers.
